Howdy, Miller.

Your best bet is an on-the-water demo.

Engine starts easily, cold or hot. Does not hesitate when placed in gear, idles smoothly in or out of gear.

Engine reaches and maintains operating range rpm (5500-6000rpm) under load without overheating.

Demos "on the muffs" are of limited usefulness. Bad engines can start and sound fine without a load on them.

Good luck. :)

Well what I would do is overall visual inspection, pull the plugs and have a look at them , pull the bottom plug for the gear lube and check for any metal filings, compression test will tell you a lot, ..and of course make and year, and last but not least price! and of course the old water test as JB said ..
