Almost finished work on my MFG Niagara (except for a few scratches and gouges in the hull) and took it out to Sag Harbor for the last two weeks. Got to fine tune the setup while there. The '93 Evinrude 40hp was a complete rebuild and had completed the break in period earlier this summer. Found the throttle linkage was not set up to factory specs. Made adjustments as per the Evinrude manual and it idled smooth and didn't stall at idle in gear. Ran with and without a fin on the outboard and finally got the best performance without the fin, and the motor set on the most forward trim hole (there are only three on this motor). Was running with a new Turning Point Hustler aluminum prop (12.25x15) without ventilation holes. Boat is 14.5foot long, and weighs about 600 lbs without motor, gear etc. With just me in it, here are the final results:

Top Speed is 29.5 MPH on smooth water, 28-29 on the bay at WOT turning 5000 rpm. Trimming all the way in reduced porpoising to a minimum, and now it only happens slightly at speeds over 25 mph. It also made the boat ride very level and cut through wake and chop rather than ride up on/over it then crash back down on the water. Boat gets on plane as low as 10 mph. Hole shot is great, more pull than I will need.

Check out these pics of my boat on the Peconic Bay and the megga hardware in the Sag Harbor Marina. I really felt small around those boats. But the upside is there is NO ONE AT THE RAMP (guess they don't pull those babies out often, LOL!)! And the season pass for the ramp is only $25!

Mark

PS, check out my windshield. It the one I wrote about making from Lexan in another post. And the gel coat finish is the result of my post about polishing out old gel coat.

Thanks to everyone here who gave me good advice on building this litte runabout. It's a blast!
