Think I may have messed up need advice

Hi Folks

I have been changing the impeller and gear oil on my 2007 6hp Yam and had a bit of trouble with the impeller going on so I gave it a very gentle tap!:redface: Never thought anymore about it and put the gear casing back on tested the gears and could get it into neutral but forward locked out totally wouldn't move either way and reverse moved one way but appeared to be making a clicking noise in the gear case and making the shift rod move up and down. So I took it back off took the impeller housing and seals which allowed me to pull the shift rod. At this point my bottle smashed as we would say in Scotland!! and I decided I would ask you guys if I have messed it up and needs to go to the dealer or its something simple.

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

Ok, so just to clarify you are turning the prop by hand? Turning it the wrong way will break or damage your brand new impeller FYI. Have you tested the engine in a test tank yet? That would be my next step. It can be hard to turn over the engine via the prop anyway.

EDIT: If its not too much trouble to put it back together, that is.

Yep I am turning it by hand:facepalm: I seem to be learning the hard way on this one! I hadn't tried it in the tank in case I did more damage but will get a new seal and try it. I need to put the shift back in to do this and given my luck so far on this is there anything I need to be careful of while I am doing that?

If the shift shaft came out you may need to disassemble the lower unit to get it back in properly. A manual would help

Yep was think that might be the case! on this would you know if I needa bearing carrier or should it come apart when I undo the two bolts at the back? Think I still need a manual.
