Got a 1973 18hp evinrude fastwin. I just installed the starter and mounted it. Nothings been energized yet. Thing is I tested the rip cord slowly and the fly wheel rotates clockwise. The starter also looks to rotate clockwise if I spin it up to meet the fly wheel by hand.

I'm unsure if bendix that throws out the starter gear will spin counter clockwise to start the engine?

Am I just being a worry wort. Should I hook up my battery and go for it, and could it damage anything if I crank it in the wrong direction?

Heres a picture of what it does just now spun with my fingers.

I THINK what your saying is that you've spun the starter bendix by hand and it rotates clockwise as it rides up the shaft, correct? That's normal, when you do that it's going to rotate in the opposite direction as the starter turns.

Ya thats what I'm saying. That gives me a sigh of relief. After all the money put into this thing so far I was ready to flip out n' kick the dog :D

Batteries charging right now. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Just for fun answer - A two stroke can and will run in either clockwise or counter clockwise rotation. I had an old 5hp Martin direct drive motor that had a mind of it's own. If you pulled the starter rope, it would backfire and run and if you were going backwards you just flipped the motor 180.
