I am thinking of going to pick up a 1962 Evinrude 40hp for my 64 glasspar. The guy is asking 250 but is negotiable, motor is not running at the moment, but has all controls and cables(was told by his friend who he got the motor from that it was rebuilt), it looks to be in pretty good shape. I was wondering how good of a motor this is and whether or not it is worth it. I want to convert my Glasspar to remote steer and start(I have 2 tillers at the moment)since I am a rather large fella, and want to plane out easier in our crabbing boat, and get out of the back. So what do ya'll think get it or not, because it is either convert my 25 to remote, or buy a motor with remote.

do your homework on the motor, check the compression, etc etc. some of the more experienced guys here can tell you if its a keeper just from the model # . it dosent sound like a bad deal. (negotiable)

Re: Thinking of buying a 62 Evinrude 40hp

As far as i can see it appears to be a good deal, i will check compression and lower unit fluid. And anything else i can think of, pretty much all i repaird on my other motors. I also know it runs 24:1, model # 35530, manual shift, it seems like a large version of my 2 motors. It is also cheaper than buying controls/electric starter for mine. I have been searching on the site for info on this motor and whether or not these are good motors or not. Thanks Mike

You are talking about a cast aluminum device that has been used in a marine environment (possibly including the devastating salt water environment) and obviously has spent it's time sitting up for let's see: 2011 - 1962 = 49 years. That's one of those OMC creations where the lower unit had a lower half and upper half and if you were good at it you could/might get the seal installed and keep the water out. And then there is the corrosion between the water jackets and the head and the block and all..........Iffffffl the combustion process is intact, but then there is the fuel system and obvious varnish and all that stuff, ignition parts and wiring harness with surely, insulation cracked and falling off....and then there is that shear pin that just loved to shear when you were being blown into the rocks by an unforgiving wind and just when you needed thrust the most, you would hit something, the pin would shear, and you were dead meat....no thrust.

OEM and after market has done a good job of supplying replaceable parts for replaceables, so that should be a no brainer, but it's the stuff I mentioned that you need to be wary of.

I had a '57 or '58 18 hp (one with the black prop, black sided blue and white cowl, blue everything else) new for $400. Very nice, quiet and dependable OB back then. As a teenager, I water skied behind it....well sorta, considering we were just breaking a plane and I was light weight and on 2 skis and since the water was only 2 feet deep you didn't have to worry about a deep water start.

Good luck. Just wanting to give you a heads up on what you may be up against.

They were OMC's bread and butter in those days. Now it is 2011 and they are still good motors. However, condition is everything. Especially if it is the electric shift model.

BTW, there is no need to be shearing pins. They use a stainless steel DRIVE pin. Yes, if you use a brass SHEAR pin, it will....

Well it is manual shift, and i figure if i get it fairly cheap, it should be a good motor for a lil while. I could always rebuild it later if need be. I appriciate all the advice, but as far as i can see with my motors i have now, if i look hard enough i should be able to tell if its worth it or not. Thanks again! Mike

Back then I never saw a SS pin. All were brass. Note the connotation "shear" not "drive"; not my doing, that's what they were referred to in the circles I boated.

SS could surely make a difference........butttttttt did that rubber hub slip in the prop; i.e. if you have an unshearable pin and hit something like a rock in a pile of rip-rap, can the hub slip and catch back like Merc and later OMC?

Re: Thinking of buying a 62 Evinrude 40hp

ok, the pin appears to be stainless steel(I looked it up on marine engines) Also I found a picture of a prop matching the part #'s http://www.ebay.com/itm/OMC-Prop-378571-10-3-8-x-14-RH-aluminum-3-blade-/350499411881 it appears to be a rubber hub.

I will be looking at the motor later today, and hopefully its in good shape. I would love to have a 62 rude on the back of my 64 glasspar. Thanks again fellas!!!

Trust me, it IS supposed to have a stainless steel DRIVE pin. And yes, the props for that motor DO have a rubber hub to absorb the impact.

Re: Thinking of buying a 62 Evinrude 40hp

Thanks F_R,

Yea I, got the motor for $100, so I took a look at the motor, and all seems well, I even opend the LU and the gears and dog were in good shape. This will be a great winter over haul and paint. I wont stick with the OEM paint scheme(black & white), rather I will paint to match my boat red & white. I will post pics in a over haul thread later. Thanks again !!!!

BTW why was that prop cut in half??? They are pretty hard to find lol(well atleast round my way)

Re: Thinking of buying a 62 Evinrude 40hp

BTW why was that prop cut in half???

Probably because it has seen better days, being alum and all dinged up and probably not costing $35 new.

I guess the OEM's of the day got mud all over their faces when Merc did away with said POS(tuff) and between that and no gearbox sticking out front of the lower unit to collect weeds and get hung up on logs and all that stuff they attempted to redeem themselves by replacing the brass sticks with SS.....whoopie for them...let's see Scott Atwater is no longer, West Bend has dissolved into Chrysler and then Force at Brunswick and don't know if they still exist, OMC died and Bombadier bailed them out making outboards with American flags on them(a Canadian company at that) which is against the law...using the American flag in any form of advertising....so I guess the money passes under the table and the big boys get richer and everybody just looks the other way......

If a steering wheel and console doesn't appeal to you, or doesn't fit your boat, the stick steering controls are another option. Pull back on the stick, turn one direction, push forward and turn the other direction.
