Thinking of trading my boat, what is fair?

If you like you can skip this first post and read the couple I made afterwards. I'm brainstorming and this first post was pretty long so you may opt to skip reading all of it until you see the mental disaster going on below.

I have a V-Bottom boat, I will get into the details in a moment. The V-Bottom offers many advantages (like getting out on the Mississippi) but I fish MOSTLY lakes, the average being 38 acres but I would like to hit the Ozarks or Mark Twain if the mood strikes. We are a family of two obsessions: The wife loves croppie, I love catfish. The lake near our house is great because we have a spot that we can do both, her on one side and I off the other hehe.

My dislike with the V-Bottom is that i can't just stand up and walk around easily in it. I'm thinking something more like a bass boat would be better. An outboard that has a sterring console I feel is beyond what I'm likely to find in trade so I don't mind controlling by tiller. I just want something easier to move around in that can handle the lakes and possibly the river.

Now, I tow with my AWD Chevy HHR. This may sound crazy but my current boat is not heavy and the car has amazing control both towing and on the ramps. I obviously cannot get crazy in boat size so I'm thinking 14ft at the MOST and would like to try and stay close to 12ft (current) so I'm not looking for a major up trade, just something different and someone may want what I have.

I'm looking for two major things:

1) Suggestions on type of boat for me

2) What you feel would be a fair trade to ask for

3) If I kept it, how hard would it be to add a floor to it? I came across a video of an almost identical boat where the guy added flooring and seats. He also has a nice bow mount for the trolling motor that gives me good ideas if I keep it. I'm not the most handy with construction but I'm ok. Vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix991MmA2lc

This place is great so thank you in advance.

The Boat:

Year: 1959
Make: RICHL
Length: 12' 0"
Material: Aluminum
Condition: I am the second owner, the previous owner bought the bought from the dealer and had the original title. There are no dents (I looked VERY hard) anywhere on the boat, no leaks, no damage, etc. Three benches with wooden tops, wood is obviously original but is not splintering, warping, etc. I have installed home made rod holders, they don't add to the value imo but certainly don't hurt it.

The Motor:

Year: 1957
Make: Johnson
ID: CD13A1417007
HP: 5.5

Condition: I am also the second owner, the motor was purchased with the boat. I bought it with a non-functioning pump tank. I have since installed a brand new pulse pump (re-using the tank) and serviced the motor. The outboard moves the prop very slightly in N but otherwise functions perfectly and is very clean and appears very well cared for (as does the boat and trailer).

There is a bow mounted trolling motor in addition to the outboard. It is brand new and will not go with the boat if the trade does not come with a trolling motor unless the trade is such that it would make sense to include the trolling motor to make the deal and then buy another.

The Trailer:

Year: 1959
Make: TEEN

Condition: Second owner, came with the boat. The tires are not even a year old, he had the reciept and their condition reflects it. New bearings a few weeks go, has a winch that works great (hand crank) and has working wiring. There is no damage to the trailer, it is not the suspension type.

My Ownership:

I purchased the boat two weeks before Fathers day locally. The owner met me at the lake and demonstrated that the boat floated and that the motor ran when primed and just could not keep going as the tank was not pressurizing. I fixed this instantly with a pulse pump. I had new bearings put on the trailer and have taken the boat out twice (young daughter, no babysitter....sigh) and both times everything has been just great. The owner had two larger boats and since he stored them all inside his garage (all year kept inside since he bought it, so he says) he wanted to sell this one to make some room and for monitary reasons.

I feel I got a very good deal on it as I only paid $175 for ALL of it. The marina had quoted him $750 (I saw the estimate) to get the motor running after they "inspected" it and claimed they would need to do a full rebuild on the motor and the tank. He was not the type to wrench n anything himself, if he knows what a wrench is. I had done some research on here and tested the compression and all before buying the boat. Everything was literally to spec, so I gambled knowing it would start and just not sustain. After the pulse pump conversion the engine started on literally the second pull once I installed the prime bulb. At this point I have a whopping total of $261.27 into the boat which includes the boat/trailer/motor, registration, a new pulse pump, bearings, and some pvc for the rod holders. I bought the trolling motor so if you count that it's $361.27.

I have no issues what so ever keeping this boat, I'm just interested if a trade like I am proposing is reasonable. As you can see I don't have a large investment on this one, so I'm in a pretty good place money wise with the boat.

Really digging this type of floor plan also. I'm guessing his is also a 12ft, possibly 14. May be best to just modify mine since I know it's full history and I'm starting from a great base....decisions decisions.

Upgrading Your Aluminum Fishing Boat.wmv - YouTube

another video. God awlful video but I like the design. I think I may just add a nice flat floor to mine, and then a deck (possibly removeable) from the middle bench to the front

Re: Thinking of trading my boat, what is fair?

A few measurements later and I have an idea:

The boat is 54 inches wide at the widest point where the middle bench is. The floor is about 46 inches wide. I'm thinking of building a platform that would rest on planks that lay on top of the middle and front bench. The idea being that the rear bench and all would stay in place (would build a floor. maybe some foam under the floor) and I would then have the deck sitting from the middle bench to the front just slightly higher then the benches to keep the center of gravity from getting too crazy.

On the deck would be two seats on posts, nothing crazy high just enough to sit in comfortably. One overtop of where the center bench is now, the other in front of it but not as far up as the front bench. The trolling motor would now be mounted dead center off the front and I would have a access hatch at the front for storing the anchor and such.

The deck would be the same inside width as the boat of course, only a few inches above the bench top, and a decent length at around six feet.

Question is if you look at the pictures of the boat there are straps that go from the side of the boat to the bench top, is it safe to remove these on the middle and front bench to allow the deck to go in? People on youtube do some serious gutting to these boats with some great results but I always tread lightly. I like to plan anally, measure six times, cut once.

224 views and no opinions? lol. My wife is yelling at me for thinking of messing with my current boat but her opinion has never stopped me before.

Maybe something like a 16-17ft fish and ski runabout? I've been on LOTZ in a 19ft runabout and I sure wouldn't want to be on there in a bass boat or little 12 ft aluminum boat.

I can't access photo sites at work so I can't see your pics, but I'll just say this. It's a twelve foot V bottom. You're overthinking it big time. Throttle back my brother.;) If it were mine and I wanted to accomplish what you've laid out here's what I'd do. Get some scrap plywood, cover it with carpet, cut notches to accomodate the structural ribs and drop it in and go fishing. Wouldn't be a bad idea to put some low seats on the benches, but honestly any other mods will just result in too much weight and expense. That little boat is meant to be simple and open.

I have only been on the OZ once and tend to agree. Though if we ended up out there on a camping trip or something I would take the boat just in case. Runabout would likely be a bit too heavy for the HHR.

I like the simplicity of that, food for thought

I'm thinking along these lines trade wise. a simple boat i can walk around in, a console is a big plus if i can pull it off. Perfect examples of the style that would better suit me:

Re: Thinking of trading my boat, what is fair?

So it looks like I have all of the wood I could possibly need and then some and laying everything out it looks like my only expense to put in a simple floor (flat to walk on nothing special) and a middle-bench forward casting deck will be the carpet since I have the seats also.

So my general plan now is to do that, which will not take long and then probably sell the boat (it will be worth more around here with this done) and find a good jon/bass boat hopefully with a steering wheel setup over the winter

That first video looked like a 14' boat - based on what you are saying, you need something with a little (not a lot) of room. I would keep an eye out for a 14' tin boat with an existing floor, or you could add on to it afterwards. By the sound of it, you have a decent boat as is - keep that as a backup...

Re: Thinking of trading my boat, what is fair?

My boat is great, the problem is my wife. She plants her cute little rear down in the middle and never moves so i end up going to the frnt when needed etc etc and i'm 6'1 so moving around in the V Hull is getting old. My disability makes money really tight so that is why I was hoping to trade it. I found many boats around here, more then a few needing some TLC where mine is ready to go and everybody wants $1500-$2500 range for them and the few I contacted about trading laughed at me like I have junk lol.

I love my boat so I'm going to just sit back and think on it. The plan was this winter to paint in in camo (DIY) and maybe add a floor so thats still in the mix too. It's that tough spot of wanting the one you don't have but being thankful to have one at all.
