When I crank my Merc 500 50 HP with the plugs removed and the timing light on it should I be reading TDC or somewhere close depending on where the dist advance is turned? Where should these engines start up at on the timing? I know a car will kickback if you have to much advance timing on them.

What do you think is going on with mine? It ran great until it backfired now I can get it started but can't accelrate in gear and the timing has to be up near 20 to 24 degrees. Good compression,TDC is correct with piston, rebuilt carbs and dist timing shows to be correct with the arrow on the dist wheel and the flywheel at TDC

Yes I removed the top dist plate and I my son was the one running it but it was during start up. He actually ran it a little after the backfire but it got to where he could not accelrate it.

Re: Third try different question

I am wondering if you may have lost one of the windings in the energizer. that means drping it down, removing the cap and cover to test them, they can cause all kinds of wierd problems the plus side is it will give you a chance to clean the cap and rotor with hot soapy water. Heres the test from CDI.

Laddie,
I have a good reading on that ohm wise the red to white was 442 ohm and the blue to white was 11 ohm I didn't check the output voltage I will have to put it back in water to start it.
