I just got finished bench assembling my omc 3.0 project. I noticed something I never noticed before (since I only had the boat on the water once) and am shocked. The alternator belt is routed around the front engine mount in such a way that you can't replace it (that I can see) without disconnecting the mount from the engine block which would be impossible out on the water. Check out the pic, the alternator isn't on yet but you can see what I mean...

What do you do if the belt goes out on the water (other than call sea tow?)

I can't attest to the way it's supposed to be but you can get an emergency repair belt that you actually put together, and throw it in your kit.

Hi steve,
All the motors are like that. I got this idea from a boat dealer. Just put a second belt behind the mount and tie it out of the way. I did it on my motor. It's nice to know its there, even though i never needed it YET!
Looks like your almost ready to put it in. It makes me want start getting my boat ready for this season.
Good Luck with your new motor!
Mark

Mark C is right on the money.. Use cable ties to secure a second belt in there... Very common problem..

Makes you wonder what the designers/engineers were thinking, don't it?..

I can't see it on your OMC,
But on a Merc. you pull the two bolts on the port-side of the mount,+ a little spacer-block falls out of the way, to change the belt.........
Pretty Simple........ ;)

Concur with Bondo. On my old mercruiser unbolting the two mounting bolts on the engine mount released a spacer that allowed room. I did not see it until looking very close at the mount. Can't tell by looking at your pix. I just can't beleive that the mfg would not have some way to install a belt. Good luck.

No spacer on this mount. I like the idea about tying up a second belt out of the way, that sounds like the way to go! Thanks guys!!

I'm dropping the engine into the boat tomorrow, hopefully I'll have it started to break in the cam by next weekend!

Thanks again!
