Today at Soundside Park in Surf City, NC, I observed a pontoon boat toodle in from the ICW. Nothing real noteworthy until I glanced at the trailer.

TS Andrea 008 (Resized).jpgPontoon Trailer.jpg

That's not a black mark; that's a space where steel once was. It's the same way on the other side of the beam.

And I meant to type "TOO encouraging" but I can't edit the subject line.

Was the owner aware of the situation, or did he/she not care?

I can't be sure as we didn't speak. He seemed a bit harried. Judging from the rest of what he had I'd guess he didn't care.

Even without the rust and corrosion I would not trust the integrity of that tongue. It is just butt welded to the trailer.

Are you referring to the welding method or the welder? I hope he only drives on smooth roads.

I would have better utilized the time taking pictures to speak to the owner, or the authorities, preventing that thing from leaving the parking lot. It's my family on the road too.

Those new U-channel's sections are properly welded to the original frame channel using fishplates. Since the fishplates are probably thicker than the U-channel's they're welded to, it's probably stronger at the joint than anywhere else...

If you have a class A motorhome with an extended frame, get underneath and check how the frame extension is welded on. You'll likely find the 2 frame sections welded together ONLY using fishplates.

I had the camera strap around my neck and shot those pictures as he motored his boat onto the trailer after somebody else drove up with the trailer. That person had been offloaded at the other dock closer to the parking lot.

So there was no conversation with anyone. No time. No real opportunity. The trailer showed up and the boat power loaded itself onto the trailer and the trailer then was pulled off.

And authorities? What authorities? Unless we happen to catch the state wildlife officer launching or retrieving his boat, there is no authority there. We are strictly self service. And I am not the ramp police. My opinion counts for the same as anybody else's but no more.

WOW! That doesn't look safe to me. It's amazing how some people can ignore the fact that some of their stuff is "crap".

Those guys must have also been partying on that boat while it was trailered; too much weight:

They weren't cooking SALADS on that grill!

HAH!

This also kind of supports an argument I've made for many years, that good bolts can be better than welding.

Only if you do crappy welding. If welded properly I would go with weld most anyday.

Lol that's bad because it's blatently obvious.. I towed my Custom Craft from the lean to it was in 4 miles to my house. Bought new tires and everything but never inspected the trailer frame until I got it home.. Appears the tilt frame or where 2 frames come togther under the boat is missing a bolt or latch, and rope was used to tie it up from moving. Not sure how long it has been like that but I thought it seemed a little wobbly coming home.. At least it's an easy fix for me.

I once had a used car dealer try to sell me a pickup truck that had a 4x4 post bolted in the frame because it was rusted out
