After reading several posts concerning imps. I decided to change mine. It is the last thing on the motor to be done before launching. What I found amazed me. The impeller that was in the thing for at least 10 yrs (prev owner)is so tight that the fins are all bent over at a 45 deg angle, and such was the fit that I cannot believe it would even turn !!! I could not move it AT ALL with my fingers. My ? is this - the imp housing meas 2 2/32 inch across. Should the imp be the same diameter? or should the fins fold slightly over. This thing was almost pressed into the housing, with the fins folded, and even at that, in the test tank would spit at least some water out the snout. I must be losing about 5 hp just in trying to turn this thing! The motor is a 1976 Chrysler 90 HP. I bored it 30 over, new pistons------the works. Now this !! Sorry for the long post, but could really use some advise on how this should really fit.

Thanks guys!!

The impeller is much bigger then the pump and the fins do slant. That is why it is imperative that you install it correctly so the fins go the correct direction. To install correctly put the impeller on the impeller key, Put the water pump on the top of the the impeller. While slowly turning the drive shaft clockwise push down even force on the water pump till it seats. A little corn oil or vasoline will make this easier and also help pre lube it before water starts pumping.

I'd guess it was probably the correct one... as said they are meant to have to be bent to fit in. Also, for some water pumps, the hole for the driveshaft is a bit off center, so the impeller vanes may have more bend on one side than the other. I'm not sure if yours is offset or not. It's helpful to use a squirt of dishwasing detergent inside the cup when you're putting it back together, it acts like lube and you can turn the driveshaft as you press the cup on. Yes, make sure the vanes are flipped the right way. On many pumps there isn't enough room in there for them to flip over themselves over if you get it wrong.

Definately good that you're doing it, after doing all that work, you don't want to toast the motor for a lousy $20 part!

Thanks ZZZZ and BF

I found a Merc dealer who said he could order it for me for Monday. (Another weekend gone) but, the good news is that it is only $13.00, and a local pickup just down the road. I went to a MercXXXXXXX.com site and they only wanted $11.00, but, $16.00 S/H !!! well now..... it weighs in at 0.05 pounds hmmmm. Here is a pic (sorry it is not better) of the impeller as is.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a342/Whoa2nellie2005/repMVC-003F.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a342/Whoa2nellie2005/repMVC-001F.jpg

looks like about the right fit to me (but I don't know your particular model)... you'll probably find that if you pull it out, it has taken a set, where the vanes hold that bend. On the new one, they'll be straight (until you put it in). You should also be able to see the wear on the old one... the contacting surface on the end is probably worn flat, maybe for a ways down the vane.

for a few $$ it's always worth putting a new one on if you've got the pump open anyway (unless you know it's very new). Did you save the key? (fits in slot in impeller) If it fell and is gone, you need a new one while you're at the dealer.

I've found that the small dealers always need a couple days to get anything, the bigger dealers with larger service dept's tend to have a lot more stock on hand (and usually the same prices)... so, if there are any others around, maybe you could salvage the weekend. Just a thought.

good luck.

Brent

I was going to say something but, you 2 have pretty much covered it all. While you got the LU apart, check the shift and drive shaft seals for leakage-ideal time to replace them.

I tis worth it to pay a little more money for the replacement impeller with a brass hub in the middle. I did.
