Where is the most stressful place to live in the entire United States? Tacoma, Washington.

So says a new study from Sperling's BestPlaces that ranked the top 10 most and least stressful U.S. cities based on nine different factors that are associated with stress: unemployment rate, divorce rate, commute time, violent and property crime rates, suicide rate, alcohol consumption, self-reported "poor mental health," and the number of cloudy days.

What's the matter with Tacoma? In addition to having one of the nation's highest unemployment rates, this city also has a very high divorce rate. Add in the stress of frequent cloudy days and high rates of suicide and property crime, and it gets this dubious No. 1 ranking.

The top 10 most stressful cities of the 100 largest metropolitan areas are:

1. Tacoma, Washington
2. Miami, Florida
3. New Orleans, Louisiana
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
5. New York, New York
6. Portland, Oregon-Vancouver, Washington
7. Mobile, Alabama
8. Stockton-Lodi, California
9. Detroit, Michigan
10. Dallas, Texas

The No. 1 stressor for most of the top 10 cities is a high unemployment rate. "It affects the entire community, whether you have a job or not," said Bert Sperling, president of Sperling's BestPlaces, when he announced the survey results. "Rising unemployment has been tied to increased crime, and declining tax revenues force reductions in social services that affect young and old alike."

There were exceptions to this. While the Las Vegas economy is booming and unemployment is low, the city has the highest percentage of divorced residents and the highest rate of suicides.

The top 10 cities with the lowest stress are:

1. Albany-Schenectady, New York
2. Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle, Pennsylvania
3. Orange County, California
4. Nassau-Suffolk, New York
5. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
6. Ann Arbor, Michigan
7. Omaha, Nebraska
8. Norfolk, Virginia-Virginia Beach, Virginia
9. Honolulu, Hawaii
10. Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Interestingly, most of the cities recognized for low stress are state capitals and areas with colleges and universities. "Government and universities provide a solid economic base to smaller cities, lessening the stress caused by economic cycles," explained Sperling.

Funny thing is, its been plastered all over our local news that Galveston Island, Texas was the most stressful place to live all week.

LF,

I have been in 7 of the 10 most stressful cities and they can't hold a candle to the stress I had when I ended up in Watts one late afternoon.

:D

last i read Ladyfish it was here but dot belive it as i also live in Galveston county.

1/12/04 - GALVESTON, TX) — When folks here in Houston are looking for a way to relieve some stress, the short drive to Galveston Island can do wonders. But a national magazine says Galveston residents are the most stressed in the nation.

dk, your just up the road a piece from us.

The report is crazy. The only time I get stressed is when the tide is too low to get the boat out of the slip and we can't go fishing.

Re: THIS Is the Most Stressful U.S. City

Pointer somewhere in the threads here I mentioned my one hour in Watts also and I agree.

LF how dare you bring out the facts :)

In Tacoma/Lakewood you wont even spent a night in jail if caught stealing a vehicle!
(How stress-full can that be)

Unemployment / violent crime go hand in hand but you can't say so! Least you offend our illegal non english speaking brothers and sisters..

You can however go to jail if a peson while in your own home admits to stealing a $40,000 item and you pull a gun on him while calling 911
(saw this first hand two years ago)

You can be pulled over by the thought police! If they "Think" your not wearing a seat belt!

(If this were just a extra tool for police to use against the bad guys I wouldn't mind. But it's all about extra money in fines)

But LF things arn't all bad in this area! We are improving as more people from CA and NY move up here and bring their idea's with them.

If I need a "Rubber Thingie" to step out on my wife with or a fresh clean needle to shoot up drugs, they are "Free" Everywhere!

Lets not forget our homeless..err that's a label and we can't use that! "Non rent paying Persons"
NRPP.. A friend works up in Seattle at Pioneer Square NRPP Free Clinic (sp) where they "must" have a space set aside for the NRPP's to lay down while they recharge their cell phones!
Yup! Every NRPP in Seattle is given a free cell phone!

But you can get a ticket (and do) if you warm up your car in your driveway even if it's locked!
(Your aiding a would be car thief)

You forgot to add that we have one of the highest un-wed birth rates.
But we have welfare reform! Yup you can only be on welfare for X ammount of years! What they don't tell the public is that once the time is up they put them in another program. Yup same office, same people, but it's not called welfare! :(

Hey but we are fighting back! Look at our smoking ban in ALL resturants, coffee shops, cafes, bars, lounges etc. And with in 25 feet of buildings!

The coffee shop/cafe I used to go to (3-4 times a day for 15 years)is down 25-35% on food sales, 50& on coffee and 75% on beer
The owner's ask me last night why all the non smokers arn't comming in anymore. So I explained that those Nasty smokers are our friends and people we do business with. Were still meeting, just not here.

Its not the best place to live LF buts its not all bad. Just getting to be too many STUPID laws..

LOL!

Well, at least Oregon made the list. Go figure.

When the upcoming tax ballot vote FAILS on February 3rd, perhaps Oregon will move up the stress list due to all the Oregon government trying to figure out how they will make their next Lexus payments!

VOTE NO ON MEASURE 30 OREGONIANS!!

H.

Upstate has the lowest stress plus more lakes
than you could fish in an entire summer :D
25% of all the freshwater on the planet runs
through MY back yard.
well worth putting up with white stuff IMO.

That was interesting. I think because of the classification of city, NJ was left out but then again we are considered part of NYC or Philly. I was listening (oh never mind I'll start it as another topic.)
