I replace the impeller on my 1967 Evinrude Big Twin 40 Hp and I had no water coming out of the exhaust relief hole on the rear of the midsection. I have always had a little bit coming out there before the service. I removed the thermostat and housing and started the engine and water was coming out of the thermostat hole. So I replaced the thermostat and reinstalled the housing and tried again but still no water coming out the exhaust relief hole and the head was unquestionably getting hot. I also blew the water passage lines out with compressed air before reinstalling the thermostat. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Mark

You could have pushd the water tube too far into the
engine block and plugged the opening.
I have had this happen to me.

Check the water tubes at the water pump again. The rubber seals called "water tube grommets" can get pushed down and restrict the water flow.

Make sure that the impeller housing plate under the impeller is sealed so that air cannot get in.

Finally, check the drive shaft seal at the top of the impeller housing. I think it is an 'O' ring outside and a shaft seal inside on your motor.

"I removed the thermostat and housing and started the engine and water was coming out of the thermostat hole."

When you pulled the cover off the thermostat and removed the thermostat and started the motor did you have lots of water coming out of the (open) thermostat cover? If you had a nice "gusher" going then you needn't redo everything down below; you're pumping water fine. If you don't have lots of water then your impeller replacement needs redoing.
