This roller is flimsy and impractical

Do you see that little bow roller between the winch stand and bunks? That is so flimsy that it bent, broke and rattled off. Is there anything better than that?

If the flat bottom boat isnt perfectly centered on the bunks then the roller doesnt even touch.
Any ideas on how to make this better?
thanks

I would install some guide ons or side bunks to center the boat, easier to load agianst the wind as well.

Why not install a small bunk at 90 deg where the frame members make an A, or a wide v roller in the same area?

Is the keel hitting the frame with the roller gone?

Thanks for the help

The flat bottom boat doesnt have much of a keel. However, the boat bottom doesnt touch the rail. A lot of the weight is resting on the bow stop.

I'm sure iboats sells these, I put one on in place of one like yours and it seems pretty indestructible

Just put a carpeted wooden bunk on top of the tongue, let the boat sit on it.

Sounds like a great idea for a flat bottom jon boat. Along with side guides!

Re: This roller is flimsy and impractical

Three of my boat trailers have a bow roller like you pointed out. On one of those I bought a second one from the dealer when I bought the trailer new so that setup has 2 rollers up front.

They are neither flimsy nor impractical. If they are adjusted properly they will suppoprt the bow correctly so that you don't have to have any weight at all on the winch stand.

If yours fell off it was probably because it had the wrong fasteners or they weren't tight. If the boat ends up crooked and doesn't touch the bow roller, chances are the trailer was too deep in the water when the boat was retreived.

Trailer side guides should solve the problem on windy days or when you're by yourself. But you still need to back in only far enough to just wet the back of the trailer and let the winch do its job.
