To try and make a long story short, I had some issues with getting the boat up to speed this weekend so I checked a few things out and noticed that the top carb did not have the 2 front screws which hold the float bowl gasket(just bought the boat 3 weeks ago, didn't notice it). This also caused a fuel leak when the engine was tilted up. I replaced the missing front screws assuming this might have been the source of the problem.

Took it back out for a test run, water was really choppy so was out there for no more than 5mins, boat was responsive so I figured it might be it.

The next day, we take it out on smooth waters and the first 5 mins are great. Boat responds to throttle and we get up to speed pretty good. I then shut it down for a few mins a trolled around for a bit. When it came time to take off again, throttle all of a sudden got really sluggish and basically had the same problem as before. Then I got something totally new...when I went WOT, it would want take off and then nothing, take off, nothing, take off, nothing. It felt like I was pumping the throttle when it was WOT the whole time. Really constant rythm too...2 secs go, 1 sec stop, 2 secs go...

I ended up having to pretty much putput back to shore. I'm not sure if this could be related to the intermitent throttle but just trying to figure out why this "new" issue happened. I have an older metal gas tank which I had to take out and put back in. I had a really hard time disconnecting the quick connect and putting it back on. I did hear a click when I re-connected it however it seemed a little sketchy.

It seems like when the motor is colder, it responds much better. 5 mins of use and that's it. Other than that is starts great and idles fine.

Carbs maybe? If so do I really need to take apart the whole assembly or can I simply use some carb cleaner and see if this works first? I'm bumbed out and really want to get this motor going soon. I just bought the damn boat! Originall owner of course says nothing was wrong with it...

Anyhow, any help is greatly appreciated as this is new territory for me. People on here seem really great and knowledgeable and I've already picked up quite a few things just from browsing around. Thanks everyone.

That seems like fuel starvation, could be a bad squeeze ball.tank not getting a ventilation which causes eng to try a suck fuel, often the ball will collapse ,dirty fuel filter, dirty carbs,What is happining is the carb bowl, fills, empties, fills empties, for some reason its not getting the fuel supply to one or all carbs,Ive seen hoses actually fail by getting a bubble INSIDE where you cant see. The hoses are laminated.Get a portable test tank and run eng.if prob is there, its on the engine somewhere. It could be a fuel pump. Many possibilities

It's funny you say that, I noticed today that the tank was leaking a little bit at the base where the gasket for the gas line connector is. Also, the cap doesn't seem to vent when tightened snug as there's a pressure release when I open it. The ball is also rock hard at all times...

If your tank is developing a vacuum then you found at least A problem.
