I was recently told that a 125 hp force is the equivalent of a 90 hp,because of the way they measured the horse power at the engine instead of the prop shaft.is this accurate or just b.s.?
regards
javsam

In the mid 80s, outboard manufacturers began rating horsepower at the propshaft rather than at the crankshaft. That allowed them to make the powerhead a little more powerful and run faster (hopefully) than the competition. Force never changed. The gearcase eats about 15% of the power produced by the powerhead. So by that formula, it's closer to 105Hp compared to motors that follow the new rating method.
