Thoughts on anti-seize

Going to be replacing the complete water pump on my 1980 Evinrude 35 hp. Have read plenty of horror stories on this site about seized and broken off bolts. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that doesn't happen to me, what are the thoughts on using anti-seize on reassembly.

Not a bad idea in salt water but not needed in fresh water.

Anti-seize is the next mechanic's best friend. The next mechanic might be you. Don't put it on your flywheel though.

For what its worth,

A very old mechanic friend of mine once warned me against using the silver antisieze on an outboard. According to him, on the rare occaision the chemicals contained in it can speed up galvanic corrosion on an inproperly grounded motor. Since then I have always used the copper anti-seize, just in case. So far, I have never had an issue with it.

I guess it was really a no brainer. Steel bolts in aluminum. Interesting the part about the silver anti-seize. I have the silver stuff, guess I will have to find some of the copper.

I've had the motor since new and have changed the impeller before but not as often as I see recommended on this site. It's been a good motor to me so this time I thought I give it a treat and change the whole pump. I couldn't find an OEM pump on iboats so I order it from another place. Doesn't iboats carry OEM parts. Would like to have paid them back for having this site.

Re: Thoughts on anti-seize

I use the copper anti sieze on everything, even on my truck with steel to steel hardware. It just makes removing things like lug nuts, brake calipers and even my trailer ball, that much easier to do should you have to remove it any time in the future and since I do all my work on my trucks and boat, it has made my life that much easier.

As far as steel and aluminum, they really "like" each other and I am sure you have taken a few stainless screws out of aluminum before and noticed the aluminum still in the threads if the steel bolts.

Everytime I replace the plugs on my boat and truck (which has aluminum heads) I put anti sieze on the threads and I have never had a problem.

um copper is even worse than the silver. stick with the non-hardening gasket compound.

What makes the copper worse? I dont want to stir up a bees nest, but I would also like to know if I need to pull a lot of bolts and clean/reinstall them.

Re: Thoughts on anti-seize

Honestly, any two dis-similar metals will react in salt. Copper is just a bit more reactive than silver. If you use any anti-seize you need to use the kind w/o any metals. That's why the factory recommends using the non-hardening gasket compound.

For things like spark plugs, you're fine since you shouldn't be seeing any water up there. But, under the waterline it's a whole different ball of wax.

So, if I run in only fresh water should I worry about the copper?

Unless you're running in completely neutral water it'll still react some. Not enough to really worry about it though. But, when you have it apart again I'd do something else next time.

Yeah, it was kind of hard for me to leave the can of spray-copper on the shelf the first time I did a head gasket. :)

Get the big can. It's amazing how much you go through treating bolts.
