Hello, I'm looking at a little bass boat that has a 1972 evinrude lark on it. It's got the trolling motor, the shifter, has stick steering that works smooth, trailer is a little tilt trailer not all rusted out. the evinrude seems to have good compression turning by hand. the boat been sitting a while but the dude said the last time they had it out it just stopped running and they couldn't get any spark. the were messing with the coils cause one was laying in the boat. He wants 250 for the package. Think its worth it. I have a wide 16 foot jon boat to put the engine on.

Well, I guess you could sell the boat and trailer and get most of your money back if you just need the motor. For that motor in non-running condition, I probably wouldn't pay more than $100 for it by itself (assuming it has good compression).

Yeh if you got the time to work on stuff and spend money on and you just like projects!
1: boat any good or do you need it?
2: know any thing about this vintage of john/rude?
3: trailer tires and bearings any good? Lights?
4: time to tinker?
5: you'll spend more than that on it!

So is it worth it?

Re: thoughts on price

I would buy $250 packages all day long. The trailer alone in my area is worth more than that.

The issue is likely not the coils, possible, but not probable that they fail at the exact same time. I would start with the kill switch shorting out. Might be a minor fix.

Compression is near impossible to determine by hand, unless you have decades of experience. I have hundreds of outboards, and I could not tell a 15 or 20 percent difference without a gauge. Take a gauge with you, test it, and if compression is even I would grab it. \

Just my 2 cents.

I grabbed it. Compression is even on both cyl. My guage read 180 but I don't think that can be right. They were however even. Boat is no good to me. plan on cutting it up. trailer is good. bearings tires lights exc.exc. Now I need to start trouble shooting. hooked a battery up and cranks good. put a timing light on the coils no spark. Also I cant figure out how to shift the darn thing. I see the three buttons on the remote and I know I don't have the wires hooked up but it wont crank unless the nutral button is pressed but it's still in gear. Any links or starting points would really help. I've got a dva tester. I know the mercs a little got one of those going once. I run evinrude but never had to work on one. really excited to get this thing runnning
