Well as you all know I have been unemployed the last few days and for the first time in my career I have taken a step back and thought about what I wanted to do. Every other time I would have a job the next day but this time I didn’t want to do that. I want to do more then the same old thing. So I have taken this time to “look” for a new start. Now I don’t want to change professions unless I could get one of those fantasy jobs like a custom speed boat builder or on a Nascar team but those days are behind me. I have young kids, wife etc, etc so I cant run off down south and work for entry level 8 bucks a hour and my skills are not compatible with what they do so I would have to start at the bottom.
Back to the choices. After all the interviews (I was interviewing them as much as they were me for a change, felt good) it comes down to three. All have positives and negatives. None so bad that I wouldn’t want the job, they were off the list at the start.

1, Mallory Flooring - small company that does a lot of insurance work. They very close to home (like 4 blocks), travel is limited , company growing fast, get in the door while they are still small, cool and professional atmosphere to work in. The job would be like a assistant manager, a little bit of everything from site checks and customer relations to sales in the showroom. The company plans on opening a new store in the next year and I would then move up to second in line at this store. Last thing though is the money. I think they will the lowest of the three with no benefits (my wife has that covered) because they are small. Another thing that makes me gun shy is I have done this before and the owner made lots of money and I had lost years. I am not getting the feeling they are like that but money changes everything over time.

2, RHI -Big company and growing fast. Dose a lot of grocery stores and big commercial work. They want me to be a like a job supervisor. I will be the go between the company and the job site super. I will run up to four jobs at one time basically making sure the job goes smooth . Lots of travel all over the state and it is voluntary to go out of state. Hours may start early and run late but the company understands if you were out half the night you wont be in at 8am. They will pay for mileage and nothing should be hauled in my vehicle. The pay will be BIG I mean real big plus lots of benefits if I want them. This guy has already called me and said to give him a last call before I make up my mind. I took it as being there was a lot room to move from what I asked for and I was pitching high so I had room to move. Now before kids and life at home was good (I have a ex- to thank for that) I would have jumped on it with both feet but now I like being home when I can and with this job that’s not going to happen but as I grew through the company it could get better but move up the latter takes time, lots of time and lots of pressure.

3, Empire carpet - some of you may know them from there TV ads. They are a big chain store that is giving the big box stores a run for there money. I know the production supervisor for many years. I stopped by and dropped off my card (Bill was not there at the time) and had a interview with the store manager and Bill on Monday. They also said my high end of what I was asking for was no problem. Company truck and gas expense account. I will be a troubleshooter for them and there was plenty of room to move up. They are big now and plan on moving in three months into a larger building that will rival the some of the mill distributors warehouses. That’s big and the company will grow again. Lots of travel and the customer is always right. If they say to come at 9pm then you have to do what you have to do but that wouldn’t happen to often. A half hour after the interview I got a call from Bill saying to come back Wed at 10am to meet someone from the corporate offices. Usually you have to wait 5 to 8 days before the head office contacts you now I have a face to face that quick. I get the impression they were very interested. I think I could easily get the money up and don’t think the hours would be as bad as RHI. There is drawbacks when you advertise on the Jerry Springer show with no payment and no interest……… and I would be the troubleshooter for them. I have worked for Bill in the past and even got my start with him when he owned a flooring outfit and it was a very high pressure environment. He will push (work) you as hard as he thinks he can get away with. Things may have changed now he is not the owner but Bill and the most senior person there do own a boat together so there is ties there somewhere.
What to do? I have to have a answer by Thursday.

Re: Three jobs to chose from...Help

Well... if you look at the other end of the rowboat you will see me sitting there. Last week my position was eliminated to save money. I am eligible for the unemployment so I am going to take my time. I am looking for jobs that I would want to be in 10 years from now. My biggest fear is getting a job and never having the proper time to job hunt.

Choose a job you will be happy with. A job that affords you free time (family time) and one that you can see yourself in years from now. High pressure is okay but it will take it's toll on you...will they work you till you burn out???

I am in the same boat.

Bob

"will they work you till you burn out???"
Good question.
Mallory = no
RHI = there will be times
Empire = I am sure I will be busy just how far it goes...... that one reason I have not seen Bill for about 10 years until now. Lots of feelings get hurt when everyone is burned out. Empire is a lot bigger then we were before with lots of people to pick up the slack like there wasn't before. I am hoping when Bill doesn't have to sign the checks things may have changed and also its a totally different company.

F_in,.....You had mentioned this in a previous post of your situation, and I responded that you should start your own company....I don't know how much experience you have actually installing flooring, or what types....I was a union installer in N.J. for 13 years & have owned my own business here for 13 more...So, I think I might have a pretty good clue about the flooring industry...I'll just discuss you're three options listed above...#1 Store manager, #2 Project manager, #3 Complaint department...At least that's what I'm getting from your descriptions....But first, let me say that you have to decide what it is that you really want from the job you are seeking....My gut says go with #1....Close to home, limited travel, definitely a + when you have kids, not to mention commuting sucks...You will save gas $ for the boat (You sure have a purty boat, BTW) :D & have less wear & tear on the car....Opportunity for advancement, and you will be doing a little of this & a little of that, so boredom should not be a factor.....
#2 Project manager, (Commericial flooring) Expect to travel alot . Keep in mind that most supermarkets & department stores do thier work off hours, unless it's new construction ....That can mean middle of the night calls, with problems that you will have to respond to...It will probably end up as a nearly 24 hour a day job with lots o' pressure....Only you can tell if the big $ is worth it.....
#3 (Customer complaint lackey)...I would rather have root canal with no novocaine than take this one....There is nothing worse than residential customers, they are always unhappy anyway & you will be dealing with the unhappiest of the unhappy....Are you good enough to fix the butchered berber end seam? Do you want to fix it with Mrs. Jones perched on your shoulder like a parrot? I think not! If the guy who is gonna be your boss is a known slave driver....No! This is a job that will always be there in the future if you need it to fall back on, just bow out gracefully...
So, IMHO, take door # 1....JK

I hear you J.kopec. I like door number 1 also but it may tighten the budget a little. I was thinking it would pan out in the long run but its not a sure thing as I am sure you know. I also know you said to open my own shop before but that is not possible in these parts. The Big Box stores are in price war mode and then there is Empire and another that is eating up what is left over and more. It was like if you cant beat them, join them. The thing I liked most about #1 is the insurance work. Let them fight it out and pick up the pieces when it is over. But being as small as they are anything could happen. Not a sure thing like the others.

Go with # 1....No such thing as a sure thing! The big boys will still be there if they survive the price wars....IMHO, Empire will not last! I've seen 'em come & seen 'em go, wait 'til their warranty work starts eating them alive...They better have a big bankroll....You never said if you install....Pick up a little side work to fatten the coffers, 'til the money from door #1 gets better....The reduced commuting thing is well worth the cut in pay, if you can manage that cut in pay.....You will sleep better at night... ;) and be a nicer person to be around, in the long run. IMHO....JK

f_inscreenname,

If I have said what another has stated, sorry, I did not read all of the posts.

I believe the choice is simple. It has to be the one that is going to make you and your family the happiest. Money is great, but not if the costs, such as time away from home or out of state are a problem. I am like you, a family man that likes to be home with the wife and kids. Personally, I would never take a job that completely disrupts what I have been trying to build at home. When your home-life collapses, it is usually very hard to recover from. Jobs, as much as we need them, come and go, and not one should ever be place ahead of your family or you are asking for problems. Good luck, consult your family(give them a stake in it, they are more likely to be flexible then), and make the choice with both your head and heart.

CJY
