Throttle binding at the control

Good morning everyone. My '81 QuickSilver Deluxe contol (Merc 140) is binding somewhere inside the housing I haven't yet figured out how to remove the controller from the interior panelling, so before I go through all that; has anyone had this happen before? Are the parts inside the housing (where the cables attach) serviceable?
The short version of what's happening is that I can shift into FWD and REV fine, but when I try to give it gas its like the cables are grinding on something right inside the handle/housing.

Probably just a throttle cable. The control itself usually doesn't fail like that.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Hopefully its something I can adjust or slap some grease on and call it good. -If I can figure out how to get it off the interior panel.. It's like whole boat was built around the controller!

I don't know about that, have the same problem with my Mercruiser set-up, took off the throttle cable off carb last night and shift cable from shifter to motor, mine is very hard when you throttle up, only in gear, so I know somthing in my shifter is hanging up, the throttle only is smooth. Has to be some sort of cover on or around the shifter to remove handle, but the remainder of it will have to come out behind the panel

It is rare, but with mine doing the same thing, and I did have an OMC control box a few years back do it also.

Nope, adjustment is not your problem, and there is no way to just slap some grease on it and call it good.

But if you keep forcing the control, you will end up breaking a $300 control instead of replacing a $40 cable. Your choice.

Like Don S said, I disconected my cables to make sure what it was, you very well can have a cable bind, they are more common

Re: Throttle binding at the control

what makes me think that its right there in the cable at the controler is that I can hear the grinding sound when I move the throttle with the engine off. I disconnected the carb linkage and got the same results. So if its nothing more than a rusty ol' cable i can live with that. Does the iboats store sell those cables?
