I have a mercruiser mcm140. From what I can gather, the cable is a morse teleflex. The cable has a plastic barrel that holds the cable to the engine block. The black plastic barrel has broken in half, and the throttle cable is not working now.

From calling a few local marine shops I am told I need to replace the cable even though the cable is fine. The barrel splits open at the top to slip over the cable so it is removable within seconds.

Anyways, does anyone know where I can buy a replacment barrel, or does anyone have any other methods they have used to hold the throttle cable in place in a situation such as this?

this is a picture of the barrel used on my cable.

These what your looking for? Click Here

You would be better off buying the correct cable than the adapters. The adapters break.

Yes, the barrel in that picture is what I am looking for. The rest of those parts are in great shape along with the cable itself. I guess I need to look into a way to secure it another way. I am not for the idea of throwing away a perfectly good cable for a plastic barrel that costs .05 cents.

Hmm, where did i put my Zip-ties!. :)

The link I posted has the kit (without the cable) did you even look at the link? You can't buy each individual part of the kit separate.

yeah I looked at the link.

That is why I said that every part of that kit was not needed except for the barrel. the connection kit is 2/3 the cost of a new cable so the cost is not cost effective. I'm not going to pay 20.00 for a kit where I strip out the barrel and disgaurd the rest.

I saw the same product from another website that was the same cost. For the life of me I cannot figure out why they don't sell the barrel by itself straight from teleflex.

Re: throttle cable barrel help.

Bin the teleflex cable and buy OEM. You wouldn't have these problems. Merc use single piece barrels, and often they're brass.

The reason manufacturers do kits is because it's cheaper than trying to inventory and supply individual parts like you're asking for. A $20 kit is still cheaper than a new cable. If you could buy each and every part individually, then the total cost of making up an assembly would be many times the price of that assembly as a single unit.

Just buy the damn kit (it's only $20 ) and be thankful they do sell a small kit like this, or you'd be buying a complete cable....

Check with a few local boat shops they may have some used or orphan parts around.

But hey if the part you are looking for was available by it self and was $20 would you buy it? So is it worth the kit price?

Ayuh,.... I think the barrel ended cables are all based off the ole Mercury outboard cables of yesteryear...

I wouldn't doubt the actual brass barrel ain't still the same...

After 7 years think he got it fixed.
Post a wider pic hard to tell what you have there, shift cable at the exaust manifold or on the top of the valve cover or at the control box
