Hello I hope someone here can help me out with this problem. I have a late70's or early 80's Chrysler Charger 85 HP model# 858HOC outboard. I had to change the throttle cables and my buddy took off the old ones and tried to hook up the new ones trying to help me out.

Problem is he didn't take pics of hook up before and couldn't figure it out. I found a manual that showed how to hook up the cables at the shifterr and they are OK, but even though I am sure where they connect I can't get the one for the gas to connect. It is about 1" too short to reach the bracket on the motor. My friend said he loosened screws where the top cable hooks up which engages the forward and reverse. Now I have no idea how the top cable bracket should be set.

Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

First and second photos show the throttle cable and quick-connect end on the bottom. Note how the spring loaded center section is pulled out about 1/4 inch in neutral. This allows the engine to shift into gear before the throttle starts to open. Third photo shows the cables secured to the linkages. Note that there is a groove in the stainless ferrule (not visible) and it is secured by the indent in the linkage screw-down plate.

The cable ends are adjusted by screwing them on or off the threaded portion and it is usually necessary to put the control in forward a bit to get bthe stainless quick-connect over the ball mount.

In the third photo, the fuel line is tucked behind the shift linkage strictly for clarity. It belongs in front to clear the linkage.

Re: Throttle cable hook up to engine issues

Hi frank,

thanks for the information. It took a little longer to get to the motor, but I worked on it today and had it in the driveway running great. I am heading out tomorrow to put her in the water and if everything stays running great the restof the summer will be great.

Thanks again for your help.
