throttle control problems

This is a single lever control with only one button underneath the handle that is the neutral safety switch, preventing you from accidently engaging the throttle. Depressing the button puts the engine into gear. There appears to be no other button or manner of disengaging the prop in order to give it more gas like when you are warming up the engine. Not sure about the model, seems to be original equipment on this old boat! Any suggestions of what to do short of replacing it with a more modern throttle control?

Re: throttle control problems

Even the oldest single lever control i use from a 1977 boat has a netural lockout to start and warm up the motor

tommays

Re: throttle control problems

Did you try grasping the shaft of the lever and moving it sideways then forward. On some controls this disengaged the shift linkage and allowed advancing the throttle without the engine going into gear. Otherwise, look for a fast idle lever which is on top of the conrol.

it didn't make any sense that the control wouldn't have a neutral lock out. I will try moving it sideways and forward to see if that disengages the shift linkage. I know it does not move up and forward at all. Will let you know.
No fast idle lever on top of the control just a smooth handle.
Joe

Re: throttle control problems

I'm embarrassed to say I just learned this myself. Just purchased my first boat and was having a hard time getting the boat started. Well after read a post last week I had no problems getting her started. Pulling the throttle inwards or towards the middle of the boat I was able to give the extra gas needed to start the boat right up.

Thats ok I replaced a throttle/shift control and had the thing backwards. Kinda hard to reverse off the trailer when the motors in forward gear. :)

here is a picture. the part you cannot see is simply a squared plastic housing at the base of the control lever.

pictures

Re: throttle control problems

here is a second try on that picture, last one must be lost in space. throttle control
the bottom of that lever is just a plastic square housing with one screw fastener in the middle of it.

Re: throttle control problems

Well the part that is blocked in the pic is the area in question. I am with Upinsmoke, the square part that you describe is what you need to grab and pull out toward the center of the boat. The whole control lever and the hub will slide out on the pivoting shaft. It will feel somewhat spring loaded, and should be obvious immediately.

Re: throttle control problems

I will give that a try...it really didn't look obvious that the base square part moved in any kind of way. But it will be several weeks from now as I am recuperating from surgery and am entirely land locked for awhile! Thanks for all the ideas.

Joe

Hmmm...
In the picture below...the round button with the red mercury lettering is the throttle only button (I think)...does yours have that?
Joe,

It is definitely not obvious until you pull on it . . . ;)

JMW- no nothing like that. Mine is just a black square plastic housing that fits over the control lever screwed on.

Re: throttle control problems

Hmmmm....
If no button then it has to pull out (like I found out the hard way on mine - only cost me a new flywheel from starting it in gear). If you can get a manufacturer/model number off it I am sure we can figure this out.

-JMW

JMW,
That control in your picture has the warm up throrttle lever on top. The handle is the square piece on top rear of control.
