Throttle control

I am having another issue with my Johnson throttle / gear selector. When the boat is in either forward or reverse and you go to nuetral you have to go past nuetral until you can hear the engine idle up before the engine is out of gear. You can feel the handle "snap" into place in nuetral but the engine is still in whatever gear it was in. As you can well imagine this is pretty dangerous and makes docking the boat next to impossible, expecially for inexperienced boaters (I tend to let a lot of young unaccompanied service members use the boat because there is not much else for them to do down here). Before I take this mechanism apart to see if there is something I can do is there anything I need to be aware of or look out for? Spings or anything that are going to fly out of the mechanism and fall into the slip?

Re: Throttle control

There are no adjustments inside of the control box. I would suspect your shift cable is not adjusted correctly or it has been stretched and needs to be replaced. The way to install the controls is to hook the cables up to the control box and then with the controls in neutral and the idle lever all the way down hook the cables to the engine. Make sure the engine is in neutral and the throttle is closed on the engine before hooking up the cables. The cables should slip right into place if they don't adjust the cables to fit the engine.

Re: Throttle control

The controls are easy to work on there just isn't much there. Since you are running in a warm salty area though you should open them up and make sure they are lubed properly. The controls can get stiff and wear out over time and worn or stiff cables can also wear out the controls. There are some nylon / plastic parts inside that eventually wear out.
