I have a 1998 225 ox hp salt water series. When I attempt to put the throttle in gear,I get no forward motion or backward motion, nothing happens. (Yes I have a propeller!) No alarms come on and the water pump is working, The rpms register increasing rpms but the gears do not engage. There is no griding sound and the propeller does not turn. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: throttle engagement

Martin,

It sounds like the gear selection mechanism is out of adjustment to the extent you get no engagement at all. I would get a dealer to check the engagement mechanism (maybe a link pin has fallen out) or maybe wait for resident outboard expert Rodbolt to give you some basic advice to diagnose the problem a bit further. In the meantime you could try a search on this forum for similar issues - often these things have been covered before. :p

Pull the cowling and check that the shift cable is working properly. You may have a shift shaft which has corroded and broken.

Re: throttle engagement

Check for a broken shift cable.
Mine broke recently and the motor reacted as though it was in neutral lock.
When I opened the shift assembly the cable was broken.
Does the shift arm on the motor move when you put the motor into gear. If not is the cable.
