Hello guys......

I have a strange issue with my 1997 40 HP Johnson. It cranks and idles fine. But when I get to a point close to 1/2 WOT and higher.....the motor starts cutting out. It runs fine for a couple of seconds then cuts out for a couple of seconds, picks right up and runs fine for a couple of seconds and cuts back out for a couple of seconds. It will do this as long as long as you're above a certain point on the throttle. It's not a sputtering type of cut out. It's just a clean cutout and cut on. You can back off the throttle and it runs fine. I borrowed a friends gas tank and hose........and it did the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Ahoy, Joe.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Sounds like a failing fuel pump to me. Not pumping fuel as fast as it is being used at the higher throttle settings.

Would a fuel pump issue cause that consistent of a shutdown / startup during high throttle?
