i have a 77 bumble bee with a 70 evinrude. i was on the lake the other night and it seemed like it wasnt running right. when i stopped and put it in nuetral the engine was reving really high. first it would only go in drive, then the only thing it would do would riv the engine up and not go anywhere. shifter would only go forward and would just riv up and not go anywhere. thought it was the throttle cable but not sure. any suggestions. :confused:

Re: throttle problems

diconnet you shift cable at motor shift manualy at the motor if it goes into both gears smoothly the chances are that you have a bad cable or poss;
shift probat control.

Re: throttle problems

Do you have the evinrude control box, or is your throttle/shift control integrated into the boat, and if so, need a description of it. Pictures might help.

Observe the throttle and shift levers on the starboard side of the engine while somebody operates the helm controls.

You don't want to shift into gear with the motor revving up high, at the risk of expensive repairs to the lower unit.

Re: throttle problems

Had you just done some work on the outboard that involved removing the cables? Or work on the controls? It could be that you have the cables swapped.

Re: throttle problems

good advice from Benny - discover whether the problem is at the engine or the control box by finding the ends of the cables at the motor, pulling the cotter pins out to disconnect 'em and see if that frees up the shifter. Also see if you can manually shift the motor in & out of gear.
