Throttle/Shift Lever

My throtle lever will not allow me to start up in neutral when I need to give it some gas. It shifts into gear fine when it's running. When I try to start my engine and I push the button and give some gas the engine won't turn over. I realize that this is a safety type thing. Is this a worn shift lever problem or is it engine related?

Thanks,

John

Sounds like It's in the Control.... Safety Switch isn't releasing...

Something sounds like its missing in the gearbox gizmo in the throttle. Does it allow you to shift ok?

JAZZ ;)

My motor is a 1995 Johnson 112 SPL. It shifts into gear okay. I just can't push the throttle up and try and start the engine (won't turn over at all).

John

Re: Throttle/Shift Lever

There is a neutral safety switch in there somewhere... mine's in the lever control housing. It will either be stuck like bondo says or it's busted. Don't bypass it, replace it :) safety safety

Re: Throttle/Shift Lever

John, I just spent the day yesterday, (75 degrees)
working on an OMC control. If you grasp the lever
at the pivot point, it will pull out toward the center of the boat. This disengages the shift and therefore the neutral start safety switch. When the lever is pulled out you can advance the throttle and start the engine. Once the engine starts and warms up, return the shift lever to the neutral spot and push it back in. This will reengage the shift and allow you to go your merry way. I'm in Florida and the greese was so stiff that the slide wouldn't slide. They are relatively simple to disassemble and grease.
