I have a 1976 75hp evinrude with power problems. I have noticed that the throttl/linkage is way out of adjustment. Can anyone help me with the proper procedure to get it back in line. Thanks in advance.

What problems are you having is the motor new to you why do you think its out of adjustment. Be careful adjusting things they have to synced up.

I have had this motor for about 15 yrs. It used to run real good, then one day I had now power. I rebuilt carbs, fuel pump, and changed all lines and filters. Still same problem. Idles great but when I put it in gear it dies. Can you give me the proper procedure for a link and sink. Also did a compression check and I have 125psi on top cyl, 123psi on middle cYl and 125psi on bottom cyl.

Check the plugwires for spark once the engine warm up to normal operating temps. The engine may be dropping a cyl. Weak ignition components tend to fail once the engine heats up to normal operating temps. It may seem to run just fine on only 2 cyls, but you need all 3 firing when it's floating in the water and in forward gear.

Agree probably dropping a cyl. Do a cylinder drop test when its running. Get a plastic pliers and pull each plug wire off one by one the cyl that makes no difference is probabaly the one not working. The problem you are having sounds more ignition related if i guessed its your powerpack especially if you have the metal one and its original makes it 40 yrs old.

I have done everything you all have posted, but still the same problem. It dies when put into gear. Everything checks out good. Still waiting for someone to tell me the proper procedure for a lynch and sync.

Here is the link and sync I wrote for my 1975 70 hp. Yours should be very similar with the possible exception of the idle sync timing.

  1. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle lever.
  2. Loosen the cam roller screw and move the cam roller away from the cam.
  3. Loosen the carb throttle link fastener screws, allowing the throttle valves to completely close via spring pressure.
  4. Tighten the throttle link fastener screws to synchronize the throttle valves.
  5. Adjust the throttle stop screw so that the throttle valves are horizontal and fully open at WOT.
  6. Confirm that the timing pointer is aligned with the 0 degree mark on the flywheel with #1 cylinder at TDC.
  7. Set the throttle cam yoke to an initial position of 4-31/32" on the throttle rod.
  8. Attach a timing light to the #1 cylinder and adjust the idle speed adjustment screw so that the timing is at 0 degrees while in neutral and running in the water.
  9. Move the cam roller back into contact with the cam, and adjust the throttle cam yoke position so that the lower mark on the cam lines up with the center of the roller, and then tighten the cam roller screw.
  10. Readjust the idle speed adjustment screw so that the motor runs at about 780 rpm while in gear, idling in the water. (May result in a gap between the roller & cam)
  11. Adjust the throttle cable so that it applies light pressure to the throttle lever to ensure that it fully returns to the idle speed adjustment screw and reattach the cable to the throttle lever.
  12. Raise the warm up lever fully and adjust the warm up lever stop screw in the control unit so that the cam roller aligns with the start mark on the cam.
