Hi everyone,

I have a 1972 85HP Chrysler. I'm waiting for my new CD module to come in, so in the meantime I've been cleaning carbs, etc., getting everything ready to go.

After the carb cleaning, I was putting the carbs back on and and making everything synch. I was reading my manual and it said that when I am at WOT the throttle shutter plates should be horizontal. If they are not, according to the manual, adjust the throttle link out.

Well at WOT, my shutters aren't even halfway to horizontal. Here's my question. I can adjust the throttle link out to make this work (horizontal) but then when I go back to neutral the throttle shutters won't be closed fully. If I do this, will I then adjust the "idle stop screw" on the towershaft or will this mess with the timing??

Thanks in advance.

Shane

This is just based on logic based on expierence
with other outboards.
Try the throttle first by hand with the cable unhooked.Get it so it opens and closes correctly
then adjust the cable so it operates correctly.
If you cant get it to open and close correctly
by hand then you may have the linkages assembled incorrectly.

(All adj. made with engine not running)Make sure the throttle shaft hits the stop. The throttle shaft is the one the block that goes vertically. If that is on the stop, then it is at WOT. If the carbs are not WOT then you need to adjust the rod. Make sure that the plates come back to idle before you start the engine.

It sounds like you might have it in the fast idle position on the control box. It should be in forward gear WOT engine not running.

Hi,

Yes, when I turn the towershaft (throttle shaft) by hand it is going fully WOT and hitting the stop (it does this with the cables connected also). It is at this position that the shutters are not quite half-way open. So from that WOT position I should adjust the throttle link so that the shutters are horizontal? Is that right?

Thanks,

Shane

Re: Throttle Shutter Horizontal?? 85HP Chrysler

Well, I went ahead and made the adjustments so that the shutters are horizontal at WOT and closed at idle. To accomplish this I increased the distance on the throttle link and then turned out the idle stop screw so the shutters would be closed at idle. Can anyone tell me if this was the proper thing to do? And did this affect the timing? I am unable to run the engine yet (waiting on a part).

Thanks,

Shane

It will not effect WOT timing. The timing is the rod on the top of the shaft. The timing was originally set at 32 deg. BTDC. Set it at 30deg BTDC. There was a service bulliten a long time ago to do so. (30 deg BTDC is the middle line on the flywheel.) Good Luck
