Through Hull Transducer

Thank-fully Bass Pro has come to Canada!<br /><br />I can now shop for items at a reasonable price without duty!(Sorry Iboats).<br /><br />Anyway, I want a fish finder for my Cutter 171 outboard. I don't want to drill the transom so I thought a thru hull transducer may work.<br /><br />Comments?<br /><br />I'm thinking eagle and I will mount in the bilge. I have no idea if this will work.<br /><br />Every boat I see has a drilled transom.<br /><br />Tx.<br /><br />Joe

the drilled transom mount-type have much better echo reading charactoristics at higher speeds (on plane). You could possibly get some false readings if the transducer is not installed as per instructions-perfectly.

I have always, since transom mounting on the first boat anyway, simply stuck the transducer using silicone or sikaflex (skimmer types) into the inside of the hull at a point that is reasonably far back (in water on plane) thinish and without stringers / etc - ie simple single thickness fiberglass. Try and keep it so that it is pointing straightdown and use lots of pug without airbubles.<br />Have done this with a number of 'ducers and they work fine - happy to post some sonar image pictures to show the quaity I get if it helps.

Hi Phaeton,<br /><br />Are you saying that you've taken the external transom type transducer and stuck it in the bilge of your boat?<br /><br />If so, can you notice any loss of sensitivity?<br /><br />I've never drilled the transom - but have mounted my transducers to a plate and stuck the plate onto the stern with Sikaflex. I've also stuck the transducer cable up the transom with Sikaflex. Mask off a route first, lay down a neat bed of Sikaflex, lay the cable along it and run another bead over the top. Pull the masking tape off just before the Sikaflex dries, and smooth the bead with wet fingers. It looks neat and straight, with no clips or loose cable to get snagged.<br /><br />Mercedes in Germany stick body panes together with the same stuff!<br /><br />Ciao
