Through the Hull Hardware

What's the best way to replace rusty through the hull, (Transom and Bow) hardware... Y'know, those tie down hooks... and the cleats, attached to the Gunwale? I saw a post about, "Beding" stuff like this? What is that and how do I do it? This is a Fiberglass boat, with glassed over wood in the Transom... 1966<br /><br />thanks

JD,<br /><br />Not sure what you asking. To prevent rust, go with stainless steel hardware.

Oh, I'm sorry.. what I mean is Can I just replace the rusted parts with new ones, and is there a way to seal them...or to treat the rusty whole before putting the new hardware in it... It is glass over wood, what kinda sealer, if any, should be used?

Use Dupont 5200... It'll Never let go...

Dupont? I dunno, but I think Bondo means 3M 5200 adhesive/sealant... It's the "stuff"... <br /><br />Just replace the old with new "marine grade stainless steel" hardware, possibly drilling out the holes just slightly to clean them up a bit...<br /><br />P.S. Stay away from hardware the is made from chrome plated Zamak or Zinc... Ain't worth squat...

Thanks SB. I figured drilling would be a good way to clean the old rust... just neaded to know what good sealant to use... I read some stuff on the web site www.rotdoctor.com about bedding this type of stuff... Any thoughts?
