Re: throw money away

Kids do dumb stuff to cars that are often worth less than the accessories they put into them. I find it humourous. I like my stock vehicle that doesn't make a horrible fart noise when driving down the street. No shiny ugly wheels either! No stereo that forces everyone else to listen to my music either. :)

Re: throw money away

Hey Crab, I look at it this way , these kids are missing out big time. They will never know the feeling of a big block chevy with cowl induction putting the rubber to the road. Or the awesome power of a 440 six pack going through the gears. Last but not least a big ole ford 351 cleavland trying to keep up with the mopar :D . Yeah the new wave wheels look cool but so did gregers back in the day. These guys are into loud stereos and flashiy wheels. I got to admit they get some real speed out of the import jap crap but it will never match the cool rides we had back in the day. Until 6 years ago my everyday ride was a 1967 chevy panel with 1972 vette motor. All the kids said I was just old fashioned??? :D :D

It all depends on if they are getting some leg (old term), or not. If so, it's money well spent. If not, at least they look cool (another old term) ;) <br /><br />Auto life is much more complicated than more CIs and a bigger bolt-on Holly. Now it's reprogramming engine control chips.<br /><br />The things they do with hydraulics are mind- blowing (yet another old term).<br /><br />Youth is definitely wasted on the young!

Re: throw money away

Ahh yes, another topic that we all hate to read but cant help but do so, and then add our thoughts to it! I am in autoshop with a bunch of stupid thugs. they all want the stupid jap cars with about a 5" exhaust system (literally) and big stereos. not to mention rims an eighth of an inch smaller then the tires that go on them. the turny ones are prett neat, but a huge waste of money if you ask me. Now the ironic thing about all of this is that everyone wants that stuff and gets it, thinking how cool and mechanically inclined they are, dont ask how. Yet none of them can change the oil by themselves, let alone look at a spark plug and diagnose how she's runnin. I cant stand phonys like that. (another old term, and im 17!) I just bought the perfect vehicle for me, for 700$ and old rusty f150. straight six, go forever, 4 speed with o/d last three days I have been fixing brakes and topping off liquids, fixing stuff left and right. not gonna do a thing about the rust :D perfect vehicle for me at this time, one word, PRACTICLE. anyways, thats enough for me on these young thugs with the shiny little junk jap cars. wannabes...<br />Craig

Here's my Baby...
ACF954.bmp
<br />#1 It's paid for, since day one... :) <br />#2 It's low and fast... (gas mileage is awful, and ONLY runs on 92-93 octane-super, and if super gets any higher than $2 a gallon, the stock heads are going back on and the cam is comming out  )<br />#3 It's semi practical, while still being able to whip a "sport compact" with little effort... (can still tow 5000 lbs. of boat, no problem...) <br />#4 I can and have repaired anything and everything on it with basic tools... I know every nut, bolt, screw, wire, "everything" on the truck...<br /><br />It's served me well over it's first 285,000 miles, even though I've had to replace both the engine and trans, twice... I would not have it any other way... When she hits 300,000 miles in a few months, I'm gonna give her a full resto... Again...<br /><br />Money well spent...

Re: throw money away

I really got a good chuckle from this topic. What with young folks cutomizing cars and trucks and stuff and doing their "thing" to have a "cool" ride and some of us "older" folks wondering what makes them do it, I recalled a cutomer coming into the shop one day to show us his new boat. "Don" is retired and probably in his late 50's. We started talking and a car went past the shop with the radio blasting and that loud BOOM BOOM BOOM you hear a lot these days. Well, "Don" got on a rant about it and just could not understand why young folks would spend money on all the gagetry you can get for cars now days. What good is it he said. Outside our shop sat his brand new 20ft Triton with a 225 setting on it. He fishes maybe once or twice a week. Toys ain't just fer kids any more. ;)

Well yes...it's not just the kids. I've just been reading about the latest Rolls Royce (which is now owned by BMW). There are some amazing little (yet expensive) toys built into that baby. Crab - you might be interested to know that the little Rolls Royce badges on the wheels - do not spin as the wheels turn - nosiree the little RR badge is always the right way up. Don't ask me how much that very useful feature cost ;) <br /><br />BTW - a new Roller will set you back US$320,000

You'd think the people who trick the cars out would have something better to do with their energy and money. I can't stand the loud 'boom' stereos either. What are they trying to prove? <br /><br />And I bet these people gripe when the cost of gas or other basic service fluctuates a few pennies!<br /><br />Wheels that do and don't move? Never heard of them.<br /><br />And you're right. They'll never know the days of good 'ol muscle cars. I love my Mustang and 351 Cleveland. It may not be quick off the line like a rice burner, but it will take them in the long run. <br />And I won't get smashed like a pop can if I ever get into a wreck either! :p <br /><br />H.

Man. this thread is scarin' me.<br /><br />I can imagine my old man on a chat forum in the 70's (if they had existed then):<br /><br />D@amn idiot kids. Smokin dope, drinking beer and sqealing their tires, burning up expensive gas, while they endlessly circle those drive-ins.<br /><br />What the hell do you need a bigger carburator for anyway? How much electricity is that stereo going to waste?<br /><br />To quote the Who: "Hope I die, before I get old"<br /><br />Have a good day :)

Re: throw money away

I see all these kids with these tricked out wheels, Rice burners on steroids and the Boom Boom radios and it kind of amuses me. The reason being is, if that stuff would have been around when I was their age I would have had it too ! ! ! But, I'll stick with my old 67 Chevelle SS, a set of good old Craigar SS wheels and the same 375 horse 396 that came in it only freshened up a little.

Re: throw money away

Hey what you guys don't realize is a lot of these kids spend over $200 for a pair of shoes only to to buy a new pair when they get dirty. They all want the look and flash and such. It is not much different than what we all went through when we were teenagers except they stuff you need to look good now is much more expensive than what you needed back then. Now i don't know where a lot of them get the money to do what they do but I can suspect and that is what worries me.

Re: throw money away

Oh, I know where the $money$ comes from..<br /><br />On the bottom end of the spectrum, you've got the ignorant little dirt bags who steal anything and everything to get what they have...<br /><br />Honestly, I'm amazed sometimes that my truck is still in the driveway in the morning... <br /><br />Middle of the road dirt bag brats sell drugs, guns, and stolen property to get a few extra bucks... <br /><br />Decent kids have real part time jobs after they actually go to school and participate.. They usually drive an old beater, if they have a car at all, and Mom & Dad enforce the rules... :) These are the ones who turn out to be decent, hard working members of society.. To them, I say, THANK YOU! :) <br /><br />And the absolute worst of all award goes to, (drum roll please) The Spoiled Brats who's Mommy and Daddy hand out money like it's going out of style...<br /><br /> Mom and Dad think nothing of buying junior a brand spankin' new Mustang or Escalade so he/she can go out and party their young life away... These are the kids who buy the drugs, guns, and stolen property from the afore mentioned scum bags with the money the parents hand out, thus keeping the market for drugs, guns, and stolen property at an all time high...<br /><br />Did I hit it pretty close to the mark?

This is my new tow vehicle. <br />'71 G30 1ton Camper Van<br />Bought it last summer after I bought the boat and needed a new tow vehicle. Paid $600 for it, and just this last friday fired up the motor. Rebuilt it myself in the garage...5 weeks from start to finish. What a sence of acomplisment to hear it fire up on the first try! About $900 in the rebuild.<br /><br />

Re: throw money away

I'm not sure about all areas, but in the Metro Detroit area there are places that have "rims for rent." I haven't looked into it, no need for expensive rims on inexpensive truck, but have heard they are still not cheap. I have also heard that some lending institutions are offering 10 year auto loans, again I don't know how true it is but it would explain some of the kids i see driving expensive vehicles.
