Two three inch exhaust hoses lead up to a Y fitting that becomes a single 4 inch hose to a bronze thru the transom exhaust pipe. It has a 90 degree curve downward outside the boat. Inside that outboard part of the pipe is what appears to be an inverted bronze funnel with openings all around to let the exhaust out. On the opposite side of the boat is an angles forward brass thru hull pickup with a one inch hose that leads across to the inboard top on the the hull exhaust pipe. This pickuo just appears to pick up water and direct it to the exhaust pipe to mix with the exhaust from the engine.
What am I looking at? I think that funnel deal must act as sort of a valve or diverter to keep water out of the main exhaust pipe but what the heck is the small pipe for????

Howdy Bill,

It will help if you post the type of boat, model number, engine, drive, serial numbers etc. and even post a picture.

Descriptions can be misleading!

it's a Penn Yan explorer tunnel drive with a 351. The pipe is located right under the dive platform and the other end is inside the stern cabinet, I cannot get a good picture. from the inside it just looks like a 4 inch hose with a one inch hose opn top of it. from the outside is looks like a big 90 degree elbow.

At first I thought the pipe was blocked buit on close exam I can see the funnel deal inside the pipe and it all looks as if it might have been cast together

I'll try for pictures again
