I have an older Trophy hardtop 2459 with 5.7 and Volvo Penta 275 I/O. It has an engine mounted raw water pump with water inlet via the lower unit. I suspect the water neck at the top of the unit is perished and allowing air into the system as the engine runs hot only when on a plane.
There is a thru hull just off to the side of the keel, formerly used for a live well. Can I use this for a raw water inlet since its virtually right next to the raw water pump at the front of the engine? I may have to enlarge it to 3/4" and add a scoop type strainer, but it could eliminate the troublesome water neck fitting on the I/O.
