Would not having the thrust washer installed behind the prop have anything to do with the way the drive shifted correctly or not?

I just noticed the last year I didn't have the thrust washer installed and when I took the prod off last fall I noticed that it wasn't too tight.

I know there is a little play in the prop shaft and am hoping that this had something to do with my drive not shifting properly at the end of last season..........

Re: Thrust Washer

freebee
while not having a thrust washer wont affect shifting it will destroy the case spanner nut and bearing carrier. look very closely at the fwd end of the prop hub and see if its stuck to the prop.

Re: Thrust Washer

I'll second that! I don't think the lower gear case would last 5 min. without a thrust washer, that washer is what transfers the thrust to the boat and not the drive train......good luck... I say this if it is a merc, I don't know about the others..........

Re: Thrust Washer

flashback. pretty much the same for all. I get at least 10 motors/drives a year that the thrust washer came off with the old prop and the installer of the new prop did not notice and installed it with no thrust washer. one would think that after the new one was installed the installer would notice that the prop is now locked against the case and wont turn but sometimes they dont I guess.

Re: Thrust Washer

I hear what you guys are saying...........guess I was just lucky. The spanner nut is fine and so is the prop.....the zinc was even still in place, however it was corroded.

When I was installing the prop yesterday I noticed I was missing the thrust washer.......only to find it stuck behind another prop I had tried the season before!

Re: Thrust Washer

Same thing happened to me. I was going down the river and all of a sudden it was like I hit neutral. I trailered it home and found out that the thrust washer was stuck to the other prop. It did some wear around the inside the lower unit, but I reinstalled the thrust washer and a different prop, and it drove, so I suppose its ok.
