Thunderbolt IV timing issues..

1998 merc 7.4 thunderbolt IV is timed at 8 BTDC, but as I rev the motor it will not advance in fact it moves further towards BTDC.

That smacks of a grounding issue somewhere. Check all grounds, including distributor to engine block.
