Is it worth it to change out mercruisers thunderbolt V ign to a msd marine electronics? I know then you can adjust the power curve and rev limiter, but is it easy and can all the guages still work, tach, low oil pressure etc? I do not have fuel injection and where can I get a schematic thanks.

Re: thunderbolt V to marine msd

Everything will work as before. On my Q7 with a 5.7 Mercruiser, the MSD did absolutely nothing other than cost money. I only replaced it because I was having a driveability issue related to ignition, but turned out to be wiring. Once fixed, I couldnt feel any differance at all. I didnt have any problems with it, just didnt think it was worth all the money I spent. I wouldnt do it again.

You can go to MSD's website and see all the wiring diagrams. It is easy and straight forward. Just remember you have to wire in the shift engine cut off switch or you wont be able to get it out of gear. That part of the wiring is not in the diagrams, but pretty simple. I ran one side to ground and the other side to the white wire on the MSD box and it worked perfect. I think the tach wire is grey coming from the front, but you can look in a Mercruiser manual to be for sure. I had the marinized distributor, coil and MSD box, but no power curve adjustment or rev limiter. I think they came seperate and more money.

I am going to do a repower I am thinking 383 but probably go with a built 350. I want to eliminate the rev limiter so I can up the cam to the comp cam marine 270 hyd roller, power band is 1500-5200. anyway are you still running the msd or go back to the thunderbolt V?

Non-FI motor controls have rev limiters? Never knew that.

I sold the boat last week. It ran great when I sold it. Mine was a stock 350. I left the MSD in it. I didnt have any problems with it, but it just didnt seem to help any.
