I have a 2000 Maxum with a 5.0 alpha one, that im trying to do a tune up on. It says on the flame arrester cover it is a thunderbolt 5, but it does not have the knock module. I got serial numbers and looked everythign up and it all comes up TB5 even the ignition module part number. So my question is, are there some variations of TB5 that they didnt put the knock sensor and module on? If so, do the other functions of the TB5 like the idle spark control still funtion the same?

When i get to it Im goign to ground the purple/white lead anyway and do all the setup just in case, but im just curious if there is anything else that I should be looking for.

Re: Thunnderbolt 5 and no knock sensor?

just for reference engine serial number is 0L648620. Is there anywhere easy to look up serial numbers and see what was actually installed on them?

Also some literature I have seen says WOT rpm is 4600-5000, others say 4400-4800?

There is nothing in the parts description, service manuals, or service bulletins that show that engine without the knock module and sensor. There were some models when the TB5 first came out that didn't have the knock module. But after that, they all had them as far as I can tell.
44-4800 is what the service manual shows for your engine.

Ok I may have tracked it down. If you look at this link #46 and #47 in the diagram are the knock sensor and module. Looking at the description it says 5.0 Bravo and 5.7 Alpha/Bravo. So I guess a 5.0 Alpha doesnt have them. Seems odd but that agrees with what I'm finding in the boat. The ignition module is 861549 just like the diagram shows and is mounted to the riser just like the diagram but wihtout the knock module.

So now the question would be, does it act the same as TB4 or would it have to be locked in base mode for that? Or does it use all of the TB5 functions except the knock function? Or what kind of base timing curve it might use?
