Hello, I have a 200 hp. yamaha saltwater EFI. Last night I took it out for a run and discovered a ticking noise. It sound like it is on the starboard side. I had it out all day sunday mostly just putting around, ran great and before I put it away I took it for a good little run to blow out any deposits. It's not a knocking type sound but more like a an fuel injector or electrical type ticking. Its scaring the hell out of me. Please help.

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Hi, Spykekpt.

This may mean nothing, but that sort of light, ticking sound can indicate arcing from a plug wire to ground. Check it out in the dark with the bonnet off.

Good luck. :)

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

It is really not a light ticking. Its sounds like a lifter on a car engine that need do be ajusted. I read that it could be an 02 senser which I have to clean anyway. Whould you know a place on line where it would tell me how to do this. Thanks

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Hey Spykekpt...just yesterday my best friend told me one of his his twin Yamaha 130 Saltwaters is doing the same thing. 800 hrs on the rig. He is taking it to a pro Yamaha mechanic and I'll post the results when I get them.

By the way, his VRO tank pumps were both replaced around 500 hrs due to malfunctions and both exhaust plenums were plugged so bad at 700hrs the motors wouldn't run right. He typically trolls 6 hrs for every 2 hrs at cruise speed.

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Thanks for your replys. I changed the plugs last night hoping that it would solve the problem but it did not. I don't think it is a bad plug wire but at the top of the engine on the starboard side near the top plug there is a black box with a wire going to the top of it. I think that is where the noise is comming from does anyone know what this is?

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

hello
that is your O2 sensor. if the draw tube clogs not only can it trash your power head but the shift back and forth with the cylinder pulses and make a ticking noise.
pull the sensor from thje holder and clean it with combustion chamber cleaner and remove the holder and draw tube and clean them as well.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks Rodbolt, Is there a site that can tell me how to do this? Or would the dealer be able to tell me this.

Rodbolt,

Is this routine maintenance or is there a preventive measure?

Thanks,
Bill

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

UPDATE...my friends Yamaha 130 saltwater has a bad rod bearing. It's a surprise to me because he continually spends big bucks on preventive maintenance at his local Yamaha wrench. These motors were babied since new. The mechanic said he has seen several saltwaters eat those bearings.
Is this what happens when the tube gets clogged?

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

hello
servicing the O2 sensor is routine maint, for ox 66 the manual states every 200 hours or once per year, I reccomend every 100 hours using yamalube and ring free. on motors with O2 sensors its imperitive to use yamalube. the 130 in the states still has carbs and no o2 sensor. rodbearings normally fail do to lack of lube due to bad check valves or more likely lack of oil system maint.
good luck and keep posting

paul
that is a pretty good link.
I also like the 100 hour intravel they post. cost 15 dollars or so for the gaskets.
I use gel seal to help lock the mounting bolts.
good luck and keep posting

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Thanks Rodbolt, It was the O2 sensor draw tube. It took about 10 min. to pull apart and 2 hr. to clean. But all in all it was not bad. I used carburetor cleaner on the draw tube and the housing to loosed up the carbon build up then used small pick tools to get the carbon off. Like a dentist. When I do it again I would let them soak over night but did not have time it was the friday before the fourth. The sensor was fine but I let it soak in ring free for a while just in case. I suggst to anyone who has not done this yet, to do it to be safe.

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Well, The ticking is back after two weeks. I don't know if this is from decarbing the engine with ring free and the draw tube is clogged from that or mybe the O2 sensor is bad. I just bought the boat and the oil tank was full with what I don't know but I added 1 gallon of yamalube, could the old oil be the causeof the clogging. The O2 sensor looked pretty clean and I still let it soak in ring free just to make sure it was clean. Has this happened to anyone else.

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

I had a cloged o2 sensor rod that was clicking. Bought a new one for $40 instaled it .but the clicking is still there.
Could this mean there is wear in the rod chamber?

Do you really need that little rod in there?

No sure what to do. or what kind of damage could be done by just let it keep clicking?

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

MAGNOMAN, I also bought a new draw tube. In my case they changed the design on it to burn hotter. My origanal one was a thick tube and the new one was quite different, it was skinny and lighter. Check it again to see if it is clogged. If so see if there is one with a new dsign. I ended up changing the O2 sensor because I think I ruined it when I let the O2 sensor soak in ring free. But after that it ran fine.

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

hello
when you soak them do NOT let the entire sensor get dunked. I spray combustion chamber cleaner in the can lid then soak just the element. if you dunk the entire sensor it dies.
good luck and keep posting

Re: TICKING IN MOTOR

Thanks, The one that I got also was thinner. I have not taken the new out to check it again. I have to pull the boat out for the winter this week. I will dive into it out of the water. I just hope that all the clicking did not wear draw tube hole bigger?
