okay i have a 1987 3.0 merc the was recently rebuilt, ran fine first 4 or 5 time out butt now under payload it makes a slight unconsitant ticking sound , doesn;t realy affect power or anything, so i cheked the exhaust for leaks put a new shutter in and sealed the manifold back up, the engines oil was around a quart low topped it off. Now if that doesn;t work i was told it is most likely my valves need tightning my question is there a specific tourqe for the valves or should i just snug them up? or does anyone have other sugestion to what that ticking may be.(if i take the airfilter off the carb it kinda sounds like it is coming from that area.

Do not adjust the valves. You can break expensive parts in a 1/4 of a second. Louder with no air cleaner should be a sticking valve. Get a machanic to find it before it, the bad valve, hits a piston on the way up. It could be a lot of other things, all just as bad. Luck only lasts so long.

Remove the valve cover and look for play in the rocker arms. Get a manual and adjust the rocker arms according to the manual.
