Tiller Handle Rod Problem

How do I get the rod that goes from the tiller handle into the engine block out?<br /><br />I've looked in my Selco book, and there's nothing about it whatsoever. I believe it's just pushed in, but I've tried nearly everything to pull it out.<br /><br />Any ideas/suggestions?<br /><br />It's on a '85 Mercury 20hp if it's relevant.<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately not, just wondered really how these tiller rods are normally secured in the block.<br /><br />Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
