I have a Mercury 40H.P.,Model 402,s/n 4,279,685 motor that was originally sold with remote steering.I want to convert it to Tiller steering. The motor was probably built in 1975-1977. I do not know if the motor was available with a tiller or if a conversion kit was ever available, but I do know that a Tiller from certain model 50 HP Mercury engines will fit just fine on the two mounting bolts that are provided for the remote steering arm and that the linkage for the Throttle and gearshift will connect just fine. I can rig up all the electric controls like starter, choke, ignition, etc. with out any problems. All I need is the Tiller handle and the mechanical linkage that hangs on the tiller (throttle & gear shift) Any one out there willing to part with a 50 HP Merc tiller that fits the two bolt pattern of the Model 402 Merc. please let me know. Thanks Francis Frogg.

You may want to try the guys at
Johns Old Mercury Web Site www.pfs-ware.com
Great site with terrific links.
Someone may have a tiller or be able to tell what will fit.
