i've built up this 16' aluminum boat and turned it into a tiller.
Long story short i have it done and have rebuilt the transom.
My first motor (25 hp merc) has a shot cdi so i ended up buying a 40 hp mariner. The mariner seems to have a longer shaft (the boat is a longshaft transom) then the merc (the merc is a longshaft as well). While i could hang the merc motor and it lines up perfectly and works perfect (except for teh cdi problem) the mariner needs a 1.5" aluminum spacer block on top of the transom to get it to ride at the right height. Also, I have to put plywood spacer shims on the back of transom so the clamp grip it right.

Is this normal?

Advice so i can hang this thing right please!!!

Hello Case..

IMO.. Fix the Merc's Cdi.. put it on and see how that runs in the water..

However.. If you want that Big 40 on the back .. and you like the way it rides then Mod your trans to fit. ( hang it dry to see if its ok to do this ).

You can allways sell your merc for more then the mod would be to hang your 40 with cash to spare :) .

If your unsure about a permanant mod for the 40 then shim and dry run the motor b4 you make the final/permanant convertion..

YD.
