tiller throttle cable

Trying to hang my 68 merc 500 on the boat I guess I bumped the hard plastic throttle cable housing coming out of the tiller handle - later when I went to twist the throttle that plastic cable just pops out and cable extends out instead of moving the throttle....

I can't find it available on line at all - does anyone know a salvage type place that might have one?

Anyone have a cable or even a whole tiller handle that maybe you took off and went to remote controls?

Anyone have a way to fix it??

Re: tiller throttle cable

not sure how long it will hold, but I fixed it.

I got digging around in parts in the garage and found a brass plug that threaded into the tiller handle hole...then had an idea.

So I drilled a hole straight through the plug so the cable housing fits snugly - then I drilled transverse through the hex head of the plug about the size of small allen set screws (have a bunch that my countersink drill bit uses). Then tapped that hole all the way through with the right thread for those allen set screws.

So the cable housing goes through the brass plug - then there is an allen set screw on two opposing sides of the hex head part of the brass plug that clamp down on the cable housing to hold it in place.

It works and if it lasts will be a much better option than the $180 tiller handle assembly on ebay or the $70 replacement conduit (that's what the cable housing from tiller handle to motor is called apparently) on ebay...
