I have a pontoon boat with a 1996 75 hp force outboard. I am considering purchasing a 1991 mercury 75 hp outboard with a tiller. will I be able to remove the tiller handle and hook up my steering cable, shift cable, and throttle cables to this mercury motor and would it be very difficult? thanks in advance

Re: tiller to remote

Pbr_1, steering part should be fine if tiller motor has steering tube on it, throttle and shift cables might be different, going from a Force (Chrysler based) to a Mercury. Also electrical engine harness should be different.
You might have to buy a complete Mercury remote control for motor.
What happened to Force ?

Re: tiller to remote

captain: really disappointed in force. local dealer said the 1996 75 hp force has a small gearcase (same as on a 40 hp) and that I needed a motor with the larger gearcase so I could use a larger dia. prop on the pontoon boat. had a reed valve assy go bad last summer, and it took 6 weeks to get a new one. really ruined the summer for me. it looks like force parts are going to get harder to get, so I am switching now. I thought I was told that in 1996 force was made by mercury, which is why I was thinking the cables would match up. does the 1991 mercury 75 hp have the larger gearcase? what are your thoughts on a 1995 evinrude 88hp spl. the pontoon boat is only rated to a 75 hp max, would this be a problem? thanks again.

Unfortunately even if Force was purchased by Mercury in '95 or '96, it manteins it's original manufacturing style which was Chrysler originally. I am pretty sure you won't be able to use cables, but maybe somebody with more experience than me con confirm it or not.
A Merucry 75hp will accept larger diameter props than your Force, also you'll be able to find parts easier and install a Stainless Steel propeller. Force don't have a good reputation, even in later years (we can start a debate on this, but I would rather not).
I was asking what you intend to do with it, since I might be interested buying it.

Re: tiller to remote

hello again captain: I am for sure going to purchase another motor. was hoping the mercurys would match up and save a few bucks on controls/cables. still got plenty of ice on lakes up here, but would like to find one soon. will be selling the force after I find another motor, but have to hang onto it till then. don't want to be without boat for 6 weeks again like last summer. anybody got any thoughts good or bad about a 95 evinrude 88 spl? how about anyone got a motor for sell 75-90 hp, 1990 or newer. pbr_1@hotmail.com thanks again

pbr_1
You would not be disappointed with the Evinrude 88. One of the most reliable motors they made! Very good motor for a toon. My sis-in-law has a 88 on her pontoon and it has run flawlessly for 6 years and she bought it used. I believe it's around a 90' or so model. Get ya a 14 X 13 prop and it will have you moving across the water pretty well, for a toon.(25-27MPH)
