This is off of a 4 cylinder 120hp with 2 carbs. Did the breakdown according to the manual but one thing is puzzling me. There is a step that says remove main nozzle or back of the main nozzle until it is loose and then remove it. So I took out the main jet and inside the center turret is what looks to be a needle of some sort that goes all the way through the carb to the top between the two flaps. It has a notched circular gasket or clip around it. I cannot understand how to remove this piece. What is going on here?

I wouldn't touch that. It's been my experience that messing with the main nozzle and the small delicate by-pass tube is a good way to render a perfectly good carburetor useless. You need a special tool or modified screw driver to fit the "notches" to unscrew and remove the main nozzle. Just use some carburetor cleaner, or some guys just use dish washing soap and compressed air. Blow everything out after you're done and you're good to go.

Re: Tillotson 501061 wb25a Carb Rebuild

I've made it through this project and am going back to update my posts to try and help users in the future. I left the main nozzle in for the chem dip as it is removable but is a pain in the butt requiring special tools and really not necessary for the cleaning of the carb. I ordered an aftermarket carb kit from ebay and it was a complete waste of time. The needle was the wrong size and the gaskets were close but not quite right. The float fuel bowl gasket was cardboard instead of rubber and didn't fit right. My advice is to try and salvage enough pieces of the old gaskets so that you can make your own. I took mine down to the local auto parts store before I ordered the kit and the gaskets they made were better than what came in the kit. Order parts from reliable people like franz marine or someone who is familiar with your application. I literally have wasted about $200 in buying aftermarket parts off ebay that say they fit my exact model and don't actually fit. They all come with convenient markings on the plastic saying that once you open it, you can't return it. But you can't see if it fits until you open it... Really frustrating... Anyway, the carb was EASY to rebuild and went back together with no leaks. Make sure to be extra careful with the float as it is adjusted by bending the tab in the back. If your float level measures to the correct specs, don't mess with it. Also in my seats there was a little rubber piece in the middle. Look out for that and do not put it in the chem dip. When putting everything back together, I used new fuel lines and clamps and it ran better than ever. AMAZING the difference it made. If you're having problems with your motor I highly recommend starting with a good carb clean as it is cheap and easy and can make a huge difference
