tilt and trim fluid for 1989 4.3 liter OMC Cobra

I have been having problems with the T&T on my Islander For now I hope to have fixed the mechanical part. But the fluid in the pump is synthetic automatic transmission fluid instead of tilt and trim fluid.
My question is whether it is crucial to have the tilt and trim fluid or whether it can can be any fluid like power steering fluid or as in my case automatic transmission fluid.

Tilt and trim fluid is similar to ATF. The pump will run on SAE 30 weight, hydraulic oil, ATF, tilt and trim fluid or even diesel fuel.

Over the years, the same Oildyne 108 pump has been spec's with about 30 different oils .... They all work
