Came home last night to find the tilt trim motor on my Evinrude 70 hp vro 1990 whirring away.

The enging has tilted up and punched a hole in the garage door.! Wife is extremely happy.

I assume i have a short somewhere. i dissconected the switch on the engine but this was not the problem. Unhitched the battery, had a beer and went to bed.

Do you think it is the switch on the controll lever, or do I look for another culprit ?

Try the relays, there should be one for each direction. I can't imagine the switch going bad and then making contact, but I can see the relay shorting inside or at the plug.

Good luck and you should have given the wife the beer in mass quantities.

Most common failure is the switch on the engine. We call it the pan switch. Water gets in the switch and activate trim system. The switch on the control will do it also. But most common is the pan switch.

I have disconected the engine switch so I can discount that.

It was very wet here, so it could be the control is wet. Is it worth spraying in soma wd40 before I dismantle it or will this do some damage ?

Phil.... If that red toggle switch in the control handle is faulty (and it seems that it is), If memory serves me right, they list for approximately $50.00. If you're interested, I have a few left in stock that I will sell for $30.00 ea and take care of shipping. (ReevesJ32@aol.com)

One other place to check is inside the control handle where the wires route thru to the harmess.
My trim/tilt was posessed and would move on it's own. Turned out to be insulation worn off the wires where thay pass from the control handle to
the peice the handle mounts on.

Philby, If motor was tilted fully and still "Whirring" away after it beer canned your garage door I assume you mean it was still running. If so ,take a look at your tilt limit switch as well.
