tilt and trim help please

I have a 1969 Mercury 100hp with power tilt and trim. The motor is stuck in the down position. When I hit the buttons to raise it the motor makes the usual noise but nothing happens.

I'm not a mechanic and new to boat motor maintenance but I'm hoping someone can help me check for a simple solution before I take it in and pay for the fix. I've read a few threads on here that tell me adding fluid might solve the problem. I've attached a poor picture of the tnt motor-it reads use only ms grade 20 or 20w motor oil. Where do I add the oil and/or fluid?

I've also attached a photo of the left side of the motor. Right in the center of the photo there is what looks like a grease fitting. It has a flip top cover. What gets added here? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi,

The oil goes in the right hand corner in the big recessed screw.
Fill it to the bottom of the threads. 10-30 works great in it.
The other is a grease zirk use grease.

THanks a ton!

Is adding oil to the tnt motor something that should be done routinely? Would a loss of oil explain the inability of the motor to tilt?

Also, there is what looks like a large round knob in the center of the tnt motor unit, towards the bottom see the attached pic. What is this?

Thanks again. can't wait to try it!

It's a closed system, so once it is full you shouldn't have to fill it again for a while.

Yep, the hydraulics use the oil to move the motor up and down.

That is the valve control knob.
If your motor gets stuck up or down you can turn the system "off" with that knob.

Re: tilt and trim help please

Fill the reservoir with the motor tilted fully up. Fill to bottom of fill hole. Leave vent screw 1/2 - 1 turn open to allow the reservoir to breath. Try to find out what kind of fluid is in there now before adding more. Many units out there are filled with tranny fluid and not motor oil as specified on the sticker. Will work just as well with either but don't mix fluids.

The control knob locks or unlocks the motor in the DOWN position.
Knob fully CCW = motor locked down so won't kick up in reverse.
Knob fully CW = motor unlocked. Can manually tilt motor up and down.

It is recommended always to leave the motor locked when operating. The system does have an impact protection system so that even with the lock engaged, the motor will kick up if you hit some submerged object.
