1987 force 85 hp. Tilt slowly lowers( on its own) until it gets to the trim and then stops. Trim does not lower on its own?

There should be a manual release valve. Have you checked to see if that release valve is good and tight? That could be the reason that the tilt is lowering on its own. I have a 120 force and just rebuilt the entire tilt/trim because of a bad pump manifold. My issue was due to the internal two-way valve... Hopefully this is not your issue.

That manual release has a horseshoe type of spring. How do you tighten or loosen?

1987 85HP ... should be a 3wire motor with 3ram hydraulics (trim, tilt, shock).

Your bleed down is caused by pump (aka valve body) failure. The pump and motor usually fail within a year or two of each other in the 17-23 year timeframe. The hydraulic rams usually outlast the motor-pump by 5-10 years.

It is normal for trim to work fine even after tilt begins to bleed down. In some cases tilt will bleed down before you can trailer the boat while trim still holds the engine under power. This is a valve body failure. You can get it rebuilt for $150ish and if you are in a hurry you may be able to find new ones here on i-boats for under $300. You are looking for part number F17564
